Is Paul Rejected for Not Meeting Jesus While Muhammad Is Exempt?

Muslims do not reject Paul merely because he did not meet Jesus during Jesus's earthly ministry. The deeper issue is authority and doctrine: the Quran does not name Paul, but Muslims reject any teaching that conflicts with the tawhid preached by all prophets. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is judged by a different claim: he did not present himself as Jesus's eyewitness disciple, but as a prophet receiving revelation from Allah.

The Real Issue Is Not "Did He Meet Jesus?"

A Muslim objection to Paul is not simply that he came after Jesus. Islam accepts that Allah may send a later prophet after an earlier one. The question is whether a person's claim to religious authority is supported by divine proof and whether his message agrees with the foundation taught by all prophets: worship Allah alone.

The Quran does not explicitly name Paul or issue a ruling about him personally. Therefore, a careful Muslim argument should not say, "The Quran rejects Paul." Rather, Muslims reject doctrines they judge to be contrary to revelation, whether those doctrines are attributed to Paul, developed after him, or defended in his name.

Why Muslims Object to Pauline Christianity

It is more accurate to say that Muslims object to major doctrines associated with later Pauline Christianity, especially the divinity of Christ, divine sonship, salvation theology centered on the crucifixion, and the theological path that later culminated in Trinitarian creed. The formal doctrine of the Trinity was articulated after Paul, so it should not be simplistically described as "invented by Paul." Still, Muslims see these doctrines as departing from the pure monotheism taught by Jesus.

"O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, 'Three'; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son."

Quran 4:171

"They have certainly disbelieved who say, 'Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary' while the Messiah has said, 'O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.'"

Quran 5:72

Why Muhammad (PBUH) Is Not Being Given a Double Standard

The comparison fails because Paul and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are not making the same kind of claim. Paul, in the Christian sources, is presented as an apostolic authority for understanding Jesus despite not being one of Jesus's disciples during his public ministry. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), however, did not claim to be an eyewitness disciple of Jesus. He claimed to be a messenger of Allah, receiving revelation through the angel Gabriel, confirming the original message of the earlier prophets.

So the relevant test for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is not, "Did he meet Jesus?" The relevant test is, "Does he have the signs of prophethood, and does his message conform to the revelation Allah sent through the prophets?" Islam answers yes.

"And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, 'There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.'"

Quran 21:25

The Quran Presents Muhammad (PBUH) as Continuing the Same Religion

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not bring a new god, a new object of worship, or a doctrine that turned a prophet into God. He called to the same foundation as Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: worship Allah alone and obey His messenger.

"He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein."

Quran 42:13

"Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and seal of the prophets."

Quran 33:40

The Correct Muslim Position

The fair answer is this:

  • Muslims do not reject Paul merely because he did not meet Jesus.
  • The Quran does not explicitly name Paul, so Muslims should avoid claiming that it does.
  • Muslims reject doctrines that contradict tawhid, whether attributed to Paul or developed later.
  • Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is assessed as a prophet, not as an eyewitness disciple of Jesus.
  • His message confirms the central message of all prophets: worship Allah alone.

Thus, there is no double standard. Islam does not say that no one after Jesus can receive revelation. It says that any claimed revelation must be judged by truth, proof, and pure monotheism. On that basis, Muslims accept Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and reject doctrines that elevate Jesus beyond the status of Allah's noble messenger.
