28:1 Ta Seen Meem.
28:2 These are the verses of the clear Book.
28:3 We recite to you [Muhammad] some of the story of Moses and Pharaoh, in truth, for people who believe.
28:4 Pharaoh rose high in the land and split its people into factions. He oppressed one group among them [the Israelites], slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. He was one of the corrupters.
28:5 But We wanted to favor those who had been oppressed in the land, to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors,
28:6 and to establish them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their armies, through them, the very thing they feared.
28:7 We inspired Moses' mother: “Nurse him. Then, when you fear for him, cast him into the river [the Nile]. Do not fear and do not grieve. We will bring him back to you and make him one of the messengers.”
28:8 Then Pharaoh's household picked him up, only for him to become an enemy and a grief to them. Pharaoh, Haman, and their armies were in the wrong.
28:9 Pharaoh's wife said, “A delight for me and for you. Do not kill him. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we can take him as a son.” But they did not realize.
28:10 Moses' mother's heart was emptied of everything. She almost gave him away, had We not made her heart firm, so she would be one of the believers.
28:11 She said to his sister, “Follow him.” So she watched him from a distance, without them noticing.
28:12 We had already made him refuse all nursing women. So she [his sister] said, “Shall I direct you to a household that will care for him for you and be sincere toward him?”
28:13 So We restored him to his mother, so her heart could rest, she would not grieve, and she would know that Allah [God]’s promise is true. But most of them do not know.
28:14 When he reached full strength and became mature, We gave him judgment and knowledge. That is how We reward those who do good.
28:15 He entered the city at a time when its people were unaware, and found two men fighting there: one from his own side and one from his enemies. The one from his own side called him for help against the one from his enemies, so Moses struck him with his fist and killed him. He said, “This is from Satan’s work. He is a clear enemy who misleads.”
28:16 He said, “My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.” So He forgave him. He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
28:17 He said, “My Lord, because of the favor You have shown me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals.”
28:18 By morning he was in the city, afraid and watchful. Then the man who had asked him for help the day before cried out to him again. Moses said to him, “You are clearly trouble.”
28:19 Then, when he was about to seize the man who was an enemy to both of them, he said, “Moses, do you want to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land. You do not want to be one of those who set things right.”
28:20 A man came running from the far end of the city. He said, “Moses, the chiefs are meeting about you, to kill you. So leave. I am giving you sincere advice.”
28:21 So he left it, afraid and watchful. He said, “My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people.”
28:22 When he turned toward Midian, he said, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the right road.”
28:23 When he came to the water of Midian, he found a group of people watering their flocks there, and he found two women apart from them, holding theirs back. He said, “What is the matter with you two?” They said, “We cannot water until the shepherds move away, and our father is a very old man.”
28:24 So he watered for them. Then he withdrew to the shade and said, “My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.”
28:25 Then one of the two women came to him, walking shyly. She said, “My father is calling you so he can reward you for watering for us.” When Moses came to him and told him his story, he said, “Do not be afraid. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people.”
28:26 One of the two women said, “Father, hire him. The best person you can hire is the strong and trustworthy one.”
28:27 He said, “I want to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine, on condition that you work for me for eight years. If you complete ten, that is up to you. I do not want to make things hard for you. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the righteous.”
28:28 Moses said, “That is settled between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete, there will be no claim against me. Allah is Witness over what we say.”
28:29 When Moses completed the term and set out with his family, he noticed a fire from the direction of Mount Tur. He said to his family, “Stay here. I have noticed a fire. Perhaps I can bring you news from there, or a burning piece of wood from the fire, so you can warm yourselves.”
28:30 When he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley, in the blessed spot, from the tree: “Moses, I am Allah, Lord of all worlds.”
28:31 “Throw down your staff.” When he saw it moving as if it were a snake, he turned and fled, without looking back. “Moses, come forward and do not be afraid. You are safe.
28:32 Put your hand into your collar; it will come out white, without harm. Draw your arm in close against fear. These are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. They have been a defiantly disobedient people.”
28:33 He said, “My Lord, I killed one of them, and I fear they will kill me.
28:34 My brother Aaron is more eloquent than I am, so send him with me as a helper to confirm me. I fear they will deny me.”
28:35 He said, “We will strengthen your arm through your brother, and We will give both of you authority, so they will not reach you. With Our signs, you two and those who follow you will prevail.”
28:36 But when Moses came to them with Our clear signs, they said, “This is nothing but invented magic. We never heard of this among our forefathers of old.”
28:37 Moses said, “My Lord knows best who has come with guidance from Him, and who will have the final Home. Wrongdoers will not succeed.”
28:38 Pharaoh said, “Chiefs, I know of no god for you other than me. Haman, bake bricks of clay for me and build me a tall tower, so I may look at Moses’s god. I really think he is one of the liars.”
28:39 He and his troops acted arrogantly in the land with no right, and they thought they would not be returned to Us.
28:40 So We seized him and his troops and flung them into the sea. See how the wrongdoers ended.
28:41 We made them leaders calling to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
28:42 We made a curse follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.
28:43 We gave Moses the Scripture [the Torah] after We destroyed the earlier generations, as clear insights for people, guidance, and mercy, so they might remember.
28:44 You [Muhammad] were not on the western side when We entrusted the command to Moses, nor were you among the witnesses.
28:45 But We brought forth generations, and their lives stretched on. You were not living among the people of Madyan, reciting Our signs to them; rather, We were the Ones who send messengers.
28:46 You were not by the side of the Mount when We called out. Yet, as a mercy from your Lord, you were sent to warn a people [the Makkans] to whom no warner had come before you, so they might remember.
28:47 Otherwise, if a disaster struck them for what their own hands had done, they would say, “Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger, so we could follow Your signs and be among the believers?”
28:48 But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, “Why was he not given the like of what Moses was given?” Did they not reject what Moses was given before? They said, “Two works of magic backing each other,” and they said, “We reject each of them.”
28:49 Say, “Then bring a Book from Allah that is a better guide than these two [the Torah and this Qur’an], and I will follow it, if you are truthful.”
28:50 If they do not answer you, then know that they only follow their desires. And who is more lost than someone who follows his own desire with no guidance from Allah? Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.
28:51 We have certainly brought the Word to them in succession, so they may take it to heart.
28:52 Those to whom We gave the Scripture before this believe in it.
28:53 When it is recited to them, they say, “We believe in it. It is the truth from our Lord. Even before it, we had submitted to Allah.”
28:54 Those will be given their reward twice over because they persevered; they repel evil with good, and they spend from what We have provided them.
28:55 When they hear useless talk, they turn away from it and say, “We have our deeds and you have your deeds. Peace to you. We do not seek out the ignorant.”
28:56 You cannot guide whomever you love, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He knows best who is guided.
28:57 They say, “If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched away from our land.” Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary [Mecca’s sacred precinct], to which fruits of every kind are brought as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
28:58 How many a town We destroyed because it grew arrogant over its comfortable living. Those are their homes, hardly inhabited after them. And We alone were the inheritors.
28:59 Your Lord would never destroy towns until He had sent a messenger in their main town, reciting Our verses to them. And We never destroyed towns unless their people were wrongdoers.
28:60 Whatever you have been given is only the enjoyment and adornment of this worldly life; but what is with Allah is better and more lasting. Will you not use reason?
28:61 Is someone We promised a good promise, and who will meet it, like someone We let enjoy the pleasures of worldly life, then on the Day of Resurrection is among those brought forward?
28:62 And on the Day He will call them and say, “Where are My partners, the ones you used to claim?”
28:63 Those against whom the Word has come true will say, “Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray. We led them astray just as we ourselves were astray. We disown them before You. It was not us they worshiped.”
28:64 And it will be said, “Call your partners.” So they will call them, but they will not answer them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided.
28:65 And on the Day He will call them and say, “What answer did you give the messengers?”
28:66 But the news will be hidden from them that Day, so they will not ask one another.
28:67 But whoever repents, believes, and does what is right may well be among the successful.
28:68 Your Lord creates what He wills and chooses. The choice is not theirs. Glory be to Allah, and high is He above what they associate with Him.
28:69 Your Lord knows what their hearts hide and what they make public.
28:70 He is Allah. There is no god except Him. To Him belongs all praise in this life and the next. His is the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.
28:71 Say, “Have you considered: if Allah made the night last over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you light? Will you not listen?”
28:72 Say, “Have you considered: if Allah made the day last over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you night in which you could rest? Will you not see?”
28:73 Out of His mercy, He made the night for you to rest in, and the day to seek His bounty, so that you may be grateful.
28:74 And on the Day He will call them and say, “Where are My partners, the ones you used to claim?”
28:75 We will bring out a witness from every community and say, “Bring your proof.” Then they will know that the truth belongs to Allah, and what they used to invent will fail them.
28:76 Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he oppressed them. We gave him such treasures that their keys alone would weigh down a group of strong men. His people said to him, “Do not gloat. Allah does not love those who gloat.”
28:77 “Seek, through what Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter, but do not forget your share of this world. Do good, just as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek corruption on earth. Allah does not love those who spread corruption.”
28:78 He said, “I was given this only because of knowledge I have.” Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations stronger than him in power and greater in accumulation? The criminals will not be asked about their sins.
28:79 Then he came out before his people in his finery. Those who wanted the life of this world said, “If only we had the like of what Qarun has been given. He truly has tremendous fortune.”
28:80 But those who had been given knowledge said, “Woe to you. Allah’s reward is better for whoever believes and does good, and no one is granted it except the patient.”
28:81 So We made the earth swallow him and his home. He had no group to help him against Allah, and he could not defend himself.
28:82 Those who had wished for his place just yesterday began saying, “Ah, Allah expands provision for whom He wills among His servants and restricts it. Had Allah not favored us, He would have made the earth swallow us too. Ah, the disbelievers do not succeed.”
28:83 That home of the Hereafter, We reserve it for those who do not want superiority on earth or corruption. The final outcome belongs to those who are mindful of Allah.
28:84 Whoever comes with a good deed will have better than it, and whoever comes with an evil deed, those who do evil will only be repaid for what they used to do.
28:85 The One who ordained the Qur’an for you will surely bring you back to a place of return. Say, “My Lord knows best who has come with guidance, and who is clearly lost.”
28:86 You were not expecting the Book to be sent down to you; it came only as a mercy from your Lord. So do not be a supporter of the disbelievers.
28:87 Do not let them turn you away from Allah’s verses after they have been sent down to you. Call to your Lord, and do not be among those who associate others with Him.
28:88 Do not call on another god alongside Allah. There is no god except Him. Everything will perish except His Face. Judgment belongs to Him alone, and to Him you will be returned.
