Surah Muhammad (Muhammad)
محمد
Madani · 38 ayahs
47:1 Those who disbelieve and bar others from the way of Allah [God], He has made their deeds come to nothing.
47:2 But those who believe, do righteous deeds, and believe in what has been sent down to Muhammad, and it is the truth from their Lord, He will remove their misdeeds from them and set their condition right.
47:3 That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. This is how Allah sets out people’s examples for them.
47:4 So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike the necks until you have subdued them; then bind them firmly. After that, either release them as a favor or for ransom, until the war lays down its burdens. That is the command. If Allah had willed, He could have taken retribution from them Himself, but He tests some of you through others. As for those killed in the way of Allah, He will never let their deeds be lost.
47:5 He will guide them and set their condition right.
47:6 And He will admit them into Paradise, which He has made known to them.
47:7 O you who believe, if you help Allah, He will help you and make your feet firm.
47:8 But those who disbelieve, ruin is theirs, and He has made their deeds come to nothing.
47:9 That is because they hated what Allah sent down, so He made their deeds worthless.
47:10 Have they not traveled through the land and seen how those before them ended? Allah destroyed them, and the disbelievers will have the like of it.
47:11 That is because Allah is the protector of those who believe, while the disbelievers have no protector.
47:12 Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds into Gardens under which rivers flow. But those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their home.
47:13 How many towns, stronger than your town [Mecca] whose people drove you out, have We destroyed? They had no one to help them.
47:14 Is someone standing on clear proof from his Lord like those whose evil deeds have been made attractive to them, while they follow their desires?
47:15 Here is the likeness of the Garden promised to the righteous: in it are rivers of water that never goes stale, rivers of milk whose taste never changes, rivers of wine delightful to those who drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will have every kind of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. Is that like those who remain forever in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink that tears apart their intestines?
47:16 Among them [the hypocrites] are some who listen to you, until, when they leave your presence, they say to those given knowledge, “What did he just say?” Those are the ones whose hearts Allah has sealed, and they follow their desires.
47:17 As for those who accept guidance, He increases them in guidance and gives them their reverence.
47:18 Are they waiting for anything but the Hour to come upon them suddenly? Its signs have already come. Then, when it has come, how will their reminder help them?
47:19 So know that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sin, and for the believing men and believing women. Allah knows where you move about and where you settle.
47:20 Those who believe say, “Why has no surah been sent down?” But when a clear, firm surah is sent down and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those with disease in their hearts staring at you like someone fainting at death. Better for them would be
47:21 obedience and decent words. Then, when the command is firmly given, if they were true to Allah, it would be better for them.
47:22 So if you turn away, would you perhaps spread corruption in the land and cut your family ties?
47:23 Those are the ones Allah has cursed, so He made them deaf and blinded their sight.
47:24 Will they not ponder the Quran, or are there locks on their hearts?
47:25 Those who turned back after guidance had become clear to them, Satan made it seem good to them and filled them with false hopes.
47:26 That is because they said to those who hated what Allah sent down, “We will obey you in some of the matter.” And Allah knows their secrets.
47:27 How will it be, then, when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?
47:28 That is because they followed what angered Allah and hated His pleasure, so He made their deeds worthless.
47:29 Or did those with sickness in their hearts think Allah would never bring out their hatred?
47:30 Had We willed, We would have shown them to you [Muhammad], and you would have known them by their marks. But you will surely know them by the tone of their speech. And Allah knows your deeds.
47:31 We will surely test you until We make evident those among you who strive and those who are steadfast, and We will test your true condition.
47:32 Those who disbelieve, turn others away from Allah’s way, and oppose the Messenger after guidance has become clear to them will not harm Allah in any way, and He will make their deeds worthless.
47:33 You who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not make your deeds worthless.
47:34 Those who disbelieve, turn others away from Allah’s way, and then die as disbelievers, Allah will never forgive them.
47:35 So do not lose heart and call for a truce while you have the upper hand. Allah is with you, and He will not take anything away from your deeds.
47:36 The life of this world is only play and distraction. If you believe and are mindful of Allah, He will give you your rewards and will not ask you for your wealth.
47:37 If He asked you for it [your wealth] and pressed you, you would withhold, and He would bring out your resentment.
47:38 Here you are, being called to spend for Allah’s cause, yet some of you withhold. Whoever withholds only withholds from himself. Allah is Free of need, and you are the needy. If you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be like you.
