Surah Al-Muddaththir (The Cloaked One)

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ

74:1 O you wrapped in a cloak,

قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ

74:2 stand up and warn.

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ

74:3 Proclaim your Lord’s greatness.

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ

74:4 Keep your clothes clean.

وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ

74:5 Keep away from filth.

وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ

74:6 Do not give, hoping to gain more.

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ

74:7 Be patient for your Lord’s sake.

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ

74:8 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded,

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ

74:9 that Day will be a hard day,

عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ

74:10 not easy for the disbelievers.

ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا

74:11 Leave Me to deal with the one I created alone,

وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا

74:12 and to whom I gave abundant wealth.

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا

74:13 and sons always present,

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا

74:14 and I made life smooth for him,

ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ

74:15 yet he still hopes I will give him more.

كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا

74:16 No indeed. He has been stubborn against Our signs.

سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

74:17 I will burden him with a hard climb.

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

74:18 He thought it over and planned.

فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ

74:19 May he be ruined, how he planned!

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ

74:20 Again, may he be ruined, how he planned!

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

74:21 Then he looked.

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

74:22 Then he frowned and scowled.

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ

74:23 Then he turned away and acted proud.

فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ

74:24 Then he said, “This [Quran] is nothing but magic handed down.”

إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ

74:25 This is only human speech.

سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ

74:26 Soon I will cast him into Saqar.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

74:27 And what could make you know what Saqar is?

لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ

74:28 It neither spares nor leaves behind.

لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ

74:29 It scorches the skin.

عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ

74:30 Over it stand nineteen.

وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ

74:31 We have made the keepers of the Fire only angels, and We made the number of those keepers only a trial for those who disbelieve: so that those given the Scripture may be certain, those who believe may increase in faith, those given the Scripture and the believers may have no doubt, and those with sickness in their hearts, together with the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah [God] mean by this example?” That is how Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. None knows the forces of your Lord except Him. This is only a reminder to human beings.

كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ

74:32 No indeed. By the moon,

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ

74:33 and by the night when it turns away,

وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ

74:34 and by the morning when it brightens,

إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ

74:35 it is surely one of the greatest things,

نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ

74:36 a warning to human beings.

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ

74:37 for any of you who chooses to move forward or fall behind.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ

74:38 Every soul is held for what it has earned,

إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ

74:39 except the people of the right,

فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

74:40 in Gardens, asking one another

عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

74:41 about the guilty:

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ

74:42 “What brought you into Saqar?”

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ

74:43 They will say, “We were not among those who prayed,

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ

74:44 and we did not feed the poor.

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ

74:45 We used to join in with those who talked falsehood,

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

74:46 and we used to deny the Day of Judgment,

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ

74:47 until certainty came to us.”

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ

74:48 So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ

74:49 What is wrong with them, then, that they turn away from the Reminder,

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ

74:50 as if they were startled donkeys

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ

74:51 fleeing from a lion?

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً

74:52 No, each one of them wants to be given scrolls spread open.

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

74:53 No. Rather, they do not fear the Hereafter.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ

74:54 No. This is a Reminder.

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

74:55 So whoever wills may take it to heart.

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ

74:56 But they will not take it to heart unless Allah wills. He is worthy of being feared, and worthy to forgive.
