Surah Al-Hijr (The Rocky Tract)

الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ

15:1 Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Quran.

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ

15:2 Those who disbelieved may well wish they had submitted.

ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

15:3 Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves, and let hope distract them. They will soon know.

وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ

15:4 We never destroyed any town without its having a known decree.

مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ

15:5 No community can bring its term forward, nor can they delay it.

وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ

15:6 They said, “You, the one the Reminder has been sent down to, you are truly mad.

لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

15:7 Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are telling the truth?”

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ

15:8 We do not send down the angels except with the truth, and then they would not be given more time.

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ

15:9 It is We who sent down the Reminder, and We will certainly guard it.

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

15:10 We certainly sent messengers before you among the factions of earlier peoples.

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

15:11 No messenger ever came to them without their mocking him.

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

15:12 So We let it enter the hearts of the guilty.

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

15:13 They do not believe in it [the Qur’an], though the pattern of earlier peoples has already passed.

وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ

15:14 Even if We opened for them a gate in the sky and they kept ascending through it,

لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ

15:15 they would surely say, “Our eyes have only been dazzled. No, we are a people under a spell.”

وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

15:16 We have placed constellations in the sky and made it beautiful for those who look.

وَحَفِظْنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ

15:17 And We have guarded it from every outcast devil,

إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ

15:18 except one who steals a hearing, then a clear flame pursues him.

وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ

15:19 And the earth, We spread it out, set firm mountains in it, and caused every measured thing to grow in it.

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَـٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ

15:20 We placed in it livelihoods for you, and for those you do not provide for.

وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

15:21 There is not a thing whose stores are not with Us, and We send it down only in a known measure.

وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِينَ

15:22 We send the winds to fertilize, then send down water from the sky and give it to you to drink. You are not the ones who keep its stores.

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ

15:23 It is We who give life and cause death, and We are the ones who inherit all.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ

15:24 We know those of you who have gone ahead, and We know those who come later.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ

15:25 And it is your Lord who will gather them [all people]. He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

15:26 We certainly created the human being from clay that rings when struck, from dark, altered mud.

وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ

15:27 And the jinn [unseen beings] We created before that from scorching fire.

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

15:28 And when your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from clay that rings when struck, from dark, altered mud.

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ

15:29 When I have shaped him and breathed into him from My spirit, fall down before him in prostration.”

فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ

15:30 So the angels prostrated, all of them together,

إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

15:31 except Iblis [Satan]. He refused to be with those who prostrated.

قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

15:32 He [Allah [God]] said, “Iblis, what is wrong with you that you are not with those who prostrated?”

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

15:33 He said, “I would not prostrate to a human being whom You created from clay that rings when struck, from dark, altered mud.”

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

15:34 He [Allah] said, “Then get out of it, for you are cast out.

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

15:35 And the curse will be on you until the Day of Judgment.”

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

15:36 He said, “My Lord, then give me time until the Day they [human beings] are raised.”

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ

15:37 He said [Allah]: Then you are among those given respite

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ

15:38 until the Day of the known time.

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

15:39 He said [Satan]: My Lord, because You led me astray, I will make [evil] look beautiful to them on earth, and I will mislead them all,

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

15:40 except Your sincere servants among them.

قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ

15:41 He said [Allah]: This is a straight path to Me.

إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ

15:42 My servants, you will have no authority over them, except over those who follow you from among those who have lost their way.

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

15:43 And Hell is surely the promised place for them all.

لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ

15:44 It has seven gates; for each gate, a portion of them has been assigned.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

15:45 The righteous will be in gardens and springs.

ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ

15:46 Enter them in peace, secure.

وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

15:47 We will remove whatever rancor is in their hearts. They will be brothers, on couches facing one another.

لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ

15:48 No weariness will touch them there, and they will never be made to leave.

۞ نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

15:49 Tell My servants that I am truly the Forgiving, the Merciful,

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ

15:50 and that My punishment is the painful punishment.

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

15:51 And tell them about the guests of Abraham [the angels],

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ

15:52 when they came in to him and said, “Peace.” He said, “We are afraid of you.”

قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ

15:53 They said, “Do not be afraid. We bring you good news of a boy who will be learned.”

قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ

15:54 He said, “Are you giving me good news when old age has touched me? What good news are you giving?”

قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِطِينَ

15:55 They said, “We have given you good news in truth, so do not be among those who despair.”

قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ

15:56 He said, “Who despairs of his Lord’s mercy except those who have lost their way?”

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

15:57 He said, “Then what is your mission, messengers?”

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ

15:58 They said, “We have been sent to a guilty people,

إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

15:59 except Lot’s household. We will save them all,

إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

15:60 except his wife. We have decreed that she will be among those left behind.”

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

15:61 And when the messengers came to Lot’s household,

قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ

15:62 he said, “You are people I do not know.”

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ

15:63 They said, “Rather, we have come to you with the very thing they kept doubting.

وَأَتَيْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ

15:64 We have come to you with the truth, and we are telling the truth.

فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَـٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ

15:65 So leave at night with your family [except your wife]. Walk behind them; let no one among you look back. Go on to where you are commanded.”

وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ

15:66 And We conveyed this matter to him: the last remnant of these people would be cut off by morning.

وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

15:67 And the people of the city [Sodom] came rejoicing.

قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ

15:68 He said, “These are my guests, so do not shame me.

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ

15:69 Fear Allah, and do not disgrace me.”

قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

15:70 They said, “Did we not forbid you from taking in anyone?”

قَالَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ

15:71 He said, “These are my daughters, if you are determined to act.”

لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ

15:72 By your life [Muhammad], they were wandering blindly in their stupor.

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ

15:73 So the awful cry seized them at sunrise.

فَجَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

15:74 We turned the town upside down and rained stones of baked clay on them.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ

15:75 There are signs in that for those who observe carefully.

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍ

15:76 Those ruins lie on a road still traveled.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

15:77 There is a sign in that for the believers.

وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِينَ

15:78 The People of the Thicket were also wrongdoers.

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ

15:79 So We took retribution from them. Both sites lie on a clear highway.

وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

15:80 The people of the Rocky Tract denied the messengers.

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ

15:81 We gave them Our signs, but they kept turning away from them.

وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ

15:82 They carved homes out of the mountains, feeling secure.

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ

15:83 Then the awful cry seized them in the morning.

فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

15:84 What they had earned did not help them at all.

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ

15:85 We created the heavens, the earth, and everything between them only in truth, and the Hour is surely coming. So graciously overlook.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

15:86 Your Lord is truly the Creator, the All-Knowing.

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ

15:87 We have given you the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Qur’an.

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

15:88 Do not strain your eyes toward the pleasures We have given some groups of them, and do not grieve over them. Be gentle with the believers.

وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

15:89 And say, “I am the clear warner.”

كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ

15:90 Just as We sent down [punishment] on those who divided things up,

ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ

15:91 those who made the Qur’an into fragments.

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

15:92 By your Lord, We will question them all

عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

15:93 about what they used to do.

فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

15:94 So proclaim openly what you are commanded, and turn away from the polytheists.

إِنَّا كَفَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ

15:95 We are enough for you against the mockers,

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

15:96 those who set up another god alongside Allah. Soon they will know.

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ

15:97 We know well that your chest tightens at what they say.

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

15:98 So glorify your Lord with praise, and be among those who prostrate.

وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ

15:99 And worship your Lord until the certainty comes to you [death].
