20:1 Ta Ha.
20:2 We did not send down the Quran to you to make you miserable,
20:3 but only as a reminder for whoever is in awe,
20:4 a revelation from the One who created the earth and the high heavens:
20:5 the Most Merciful [ar-Rahman: mercy reaching all creation] rose over the Throne.
20:6 His is everything in the heavens, everything on earth, everything between them, and everything under the soil.
20:7 If you speak aloud, He knows the secret and what is even more hidden.
20:8 Allah [God], there is no god but Him. His are the most beautiful names.
20:9 Has the story of Moses reached you?
20:10 When he saw a fire, he said to his family, “Stay here. I have spotted a fire. Maybe I can bring you a flaming piece from it, or find directions at the fire.”
20:11 Then, when he came to it, he was called: “Moses!
20:12 It is I, your Lord. Take off your sandals; you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
20:13 And I have chosen you, so listen to what is being revealed.
20:14 I am Allah. There is no god but Me, so worship Me, and establish prayer to remember Me.
20:15 The Hour is coming. I keep it all but hidden, so every soul may be repaid for what it strives for.
20:16 So do not let anyone who does not believe in it, and follows his own desire, turn you away from it, or you will fall.
20:17 And what is that in your right hand, Moses?
20:18 He said, “It is my staff. I lean on it, beat down leaves with it for my sheep, and I have other uses for it.”
20:19 He said, “Throw it down, Moses.”
20:20 So he threw it down, and suddenly it was a snake, moving fast.
20:21 He said, “Take it, and do not be afraid. We will return it to its former state.”
20:22 And draw your hand to your side; it will come out white, with no disease, another sign.
20:23 So We may show you some of Our greatest signs.
20:24 Go to Pharaoh. He has overstepped all bounds.
20:25 He said, “My Lord, open my heart for me,
20:26 and make my task easy for me,
20:27 and untie the knot from my tongue,
20:28 so they may understand what I say.
20:29 Appoint for me a helper from my family:
20:30 Aaron, my brother.
20:31 Strengthen me through him,
20:32 and let him share in my task,
20:33 so we may glorify You much
20:34 and remember You much.
20:35 You have always seen us.”
20:36 He said, “You have been granted what you asked for, Moses.”
20:37 And We had certainly favored you once before,
20:38 when We inspired your mother with this:
20:39 "Put him in the chest, then put it in the river. Let the river cast it onto the bank, where an enemy of Mine and his [Pharaoh] will take him." And I cast love over you from Me, so that you would be raised under My eye.
20:40 When your sister went along and said, "Shall I point you to someone who will care for him?" So We returned you to your mother, so her eyes would be comforted and she would not grieve. And you killed a man, then We saved you from distress and tested you through trials. Then you stayed for years among the people of Madyan. Then you came at the appointed time, Moses.
20:41 And I chose you for Myself.
20:42 Go, you and your brother [Aaron], with My signs, and do not let up in remembering Me.
20:43 Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. He has overstepped all bounds.
20:44 Speak to him gently, so perhaps he will take heed or fear.
20:45 They said, "Our Lord, we fear he may strike at us first, or go too far."
20:46 He said, "Do not fear. I am with you both; I hear and I see.
20:47 So go to him and say, 'We are two messengers from your Lord, so let the Children of Israel go with us, and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. Peace is upon whoever follows guidance.
20:48 It has been revealed to us that punishment is upon whoever denies and turns away.'"
20:49 He [Pharaoh] said, “Then who is your Lord, Moses?”
20:50 He said, “Our Lord is the One who gave everything its form, then guided it.”
20:51 He said, “Then what about the earlier generations?”
20:52 He said, “Knowledge of them is with my Lord, in a record. My Lord does not err, and He does not forget.”
20:53 He made the earth a bed for you, opened pathways through it for you, and sent down water from the sky; then with it We brought out pairs of many different plants.
20:54 Eat, and graze your livestock. Surely in that are signs for people of understanding.
20:55 From it [the earth] We created you, into it We will return you, and from it We will bring you out another time.
20:56 We certainly showed him [Pharaoh] all Our signs, but he denied them and refused.
20:57 He said, “Have you come to drive us out of our land with your magic, Moses?
20:58 We will surely bring you magic like it. So set an appointment between us and you, one that neither we nor you will miss, in a fair place.”
20:59 He said, “Your appointment is the Festival Day, and let the people be gathered in the morning.”
20:60 Then Pharaoh turned away, gathered his plan, and came.
20:61 Moses said to them, “Woe to you. Do not invent a lie against Allah, or He will wipe you out with punishment. Whoever invents lies has already failed.”
20:62 Then they argued among themselves over their matter and kept their private counsel secret.
20:63 They said, “These two are magicians. They want to drive you out of your land by their magic and do away with your finest way of life.
20:64 So bring your whole plan together, then come in a row. Today, whoever gains the upper hand will succeed.”
20:65 They said, “Moses, either you throw, or we will be the first to throw.”
20:66 He said, “No, you throw.” Then, suddenly, their ropes and staffs seemed to Moses, by their magic, to be moving.
20:67 So Moses felt fear within himself.
20:68 We said, “Do not be afraid. It is you who will have the upper hand.
20:69 Throw what is in your right hand [your staff]; it will swallow up what they have made. What they have made is only a magician’s trick, and no magician succeeds wherever he goes.”
20:70 The magicians dropped into prostration. They said, “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.”
20:71 Pharaoh said, “You believed in him before I gave you permission? He is surely your chief, the one who taught you magic. I will cut off a hand and a foot from opposite sides, and I will crucify you on palm trunks. Then you will know which of us is harsher in punishment and more lasting.”
20:72 They said, “We will never choose you over the clear proofs that have come to us, and the One who created us. So pass whatever judgment you are going to pass; you can pass judgment only in this present life.”
20:73 [The magicians said to Pharaoh,] We have believed in our Lord, so He may forgive us our sins and the magic you forced on us. Allah is better and more lasting.
20:74 Whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal will have Hell, where he will neither die nor live.
20:75 But whoever comes to Him as a believer, having done righteous deeds, they will have the highest ranks:
20:76 Gardens of Eden, with rivers flowing beneath them, staying there forever. That is the reward of whoever purifies himself.
20:77 We revealed to Moses: Travel by night with My servants, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea, not fearing being overtaken and not being afraid.
20:78 Then Pharaoh followed them with his troops, and the sea covered them with what it covered them with.
20:79 Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.
20:80 Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy, made an appointment with you on the right side of the Mount, and sent down to you manna and quail [food provided in the wilderness].
20:81 Eat from the good things We have provided you, and do not overstep regarding it, or My anger will come down upon you. Whoever My anger comes down upon has fallen to ruin.
20:82 And I am indeed most forgiving to whoever repents, believes, does right, then stays guided.
20:83 [Allah said,] What made you hurry away from your people, Moses?
20:84 He said, They are right behind me, and I hurried to You, my Lord, so You would be pleased.
20:85 He said, “We tested your people in your absence, and the Samiri led them off course.”
20:86 So Moses returned to his people angry and deeply grieved. He said, “My people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Did the time seem too long to you, or did you want anger from your Lord to fall on you, so you broke your appointment with me?”
20:87 They said, “We did not break our appointment with you by our own choice. But we were made to carry loads of jewelry from the people [the Egyptians], so we threw them, and the Samiri threw as well.”
20:88 Then he brought out for them a calf, a body with a lowing sound. They said, “This is your god and Moses’s god, but he forgot.”
20:89 Could they not see that it gave them no answer, and had no power to harm them or benefit them?
20:90 Aaron had already told them, “My people, you are only being tested by it. Your Lord is ar-Rahman, so follow me and obey my command.”
20:91 They said, “We will not stop devoting ourselves to it until Moses returns to us.”
20:92 He said, “Aaron, when you saw they had lost their way, what stopped you
20:93 from following me? Did you disobey my command?”
20:94 He said, “Son of my mother, do not grab me by my beard or by my head. I was afraid you would say, ‘You caused division among the Children of Israel and did not respect my word.’”
20:95 He said, “Then what is your story, Samiri?”
20:96 He said, “I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful from the messenger’s track, then threw it [onto the calf]. That is how my own soul made it seem right to me.”
20:97 He [Moses, to the Samiri] said, “Then go. In this life, your lot is to say, ‘No touching.’ And you have an appointment you will not miss. Look at your god, the one you stayed devoted to: we will burn it, then scatter it into the sea as dust.”
20:98 Your only god is Allah; there is no god but Him. He encompasses everything in knowledge.
20:99 In this way We relate to you [Prophet] some of the news of what came before. And We have given you, from Us, a Reminder.
20:100 Whoever turns away from this Reminder will carry a burden on the Day of Resurrection,
20:101 remaining under it forever. What an evil load it will be for them on the Day of Resurrection.
20:102 The Day the Trumpet is blown, We will gather the criminals that Day, blue-eyed.
20:103 They will whisper among themselves, “You stayed only ten.”
20:104 We know best what they will say, when the most level-headed of them says, “You stayed only a day.”
20:105 They ask you about the mountains. Say, “My Lord will blast them away completely,
20:106 leaving the land a level plain.
20:107 You will see in it no dip and no rise.”
20:108 On that Day they will follow the Caller with no turning aside. Voices will be humbled before the Most Compassionate; you will hear only a faint sound.
20:109 On that Day, no intercession will help except from someone ar-Rahman has permitted and whose words He accepts.
20:110 He knows what is before them and what is behind them, while they cannot encompass Him in knowledge.
20:111 Faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and whoever carries wrongdoing will have failed.
20:112 But whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer will fear no injustice and no loss.
20:113 And so We sent it down as an Arabic Quran, and We have varied the warnings within it, so that they may take heed, or it may stir a reminder in them.
20:114 So high above all is Allah, the true King. Do not rush with the Quran before its revelation to you is completed, but say, “My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
20:115 We had made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot, and We found in him no firm resolve.
20:116 And when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” they prostrated, except Iblis [Satan]. He refused.
20:117 So We said, “Adam, this is an enemy to you and your wife. Do not let him drive you both out of the Garden, or you, Adam, will suffer.
20:118 There, you will not go hungry, nor be unclothed.
20:119 And you will not suffer thirst there, nor be exposed to the sun.
20:120 Then Satan whispered to him. He said, “Adam, shall I show you the tree of everlasting life and a kingdom that never wears out?”
20:121 Then they both ate from it, and their shame became visible to them. They began fastening leaves of Paradise over themselves. Adam disobeyed his Lord and fell into error.
20:122 Then his Lord chose him, accepted his repentance, and guided him.
20:123 He said, “Go down from it, both of you, all together. Some of you will be enemies to others. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will not lose his way and will not suffer.”
20:124 But whoever turns away from My reminder will have a constricted life, and We will gather him blind on Resurrection Day.
20:125 He will say, “My Lord, why have You gathered me blind, when I used to see?”
20:126 He will say, “That is how it is. Our signs came to you, but you ignored them; and today, in the same way, you are ignored.”
20:127 That is how We repay whoever goes beyond bounds and does not believe in the signs of his Lord. The punishment of the Hereafter is harsher and more lasting.
20:128 Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, whose homes they walk through? In that are signs for people of understanding.
20:129 Were it not for a word already passed from your Lord, and for a fixed term, it [their destruction] would have been unavoidable.
20:130 So be patient with what they say, and glorify your Lord with praise before the sun rises and before it sets. During portions of the night, glorify Him, and at the ends of the day, so that you may be content.
20:131 Do not gaze longingly at what We have given some groups of them to enjoy, the bloom of the life of this world, so that We may test them through it. Your Lord’s provision is better and more lasting.
20:132 Command your family to pray, and be steadfast in it. We do not ask you for provision; We provide for you. The final outcome belongs to the reverent.
20:133 They say, “Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?” Has clear evidence not already come to them of what was in the earlier Scriptures?
20:134 If We had destroyed them with a punishment before he came [the Messenger], they would have said, “Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could follow Your signs before we were humiliated and disgraced?”
20:135 Say, “Everyone is waiting, so wait. Soon you will know who belongs to the straight path and who was guided.”
