Surah At-Tahrim (The Prohibition)

Madani · 12 ayahs

66:1 O Prophet, why do you forbid yourself what Allah [God] has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful.

66:2 Allah has already prescribed for you a way to release yourselves from your oaths. Allah is your Protector, and He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.

66:3 And when the Prophet confided a matter to one of his wives, then she disclosed it, and Allah made it known to him, he mentioned part of it and passed over part. When he told her of it, she said, “Who told you this?” He said, “The All-Knowing, the All-Aware told me.”

66:4 If you two repent to Allah, your hearts have already swerved. But if you two support each other against him, then Allah Himself is his Protector, as are Gabriel and the righteous believers; beyond that, the angels are his supporters.

66:5 Perhaps, if he divorces you, his Lord will replace you with wives better than you: women submitted to Allah, faithful, obedient, repentant, worshipful, fasting, previously married and virgins.

66:6 O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones. Over it are stern, severe angels who do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and they do what they are commanded.

66:7 O you who disbelieved, do not make excuses today [on the Day of Judgment]. You are only being repaid for what you used to do.

66:8 O you who believe, turn to Allah in sincere repentance. It may be that your Lord will erase your bad deeds and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet or those who believed with him. Their light will move ahead of them and at their right. They will say, “Our Lord, complete our light for us and forgive us. You have power over everything.”

66:9 O Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Their home is Hell, and what a wretched destination.

66:10 Allah gives an example for those who disbelieved: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were married to two righteous servants of Ours, but they betrayed them. So those two could not help them at all against Allah, and it was said, “Enter the Fire with those who enter.”

66:11 And Allah gives an example for those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, “My Lord, build me a house near You in Paradise, save me from Pharaoh and his deeds, and save me from the wrongdoing people.”

66:12 And He gives the example of Mary, daughter of Imran, who kept herself chaste; so We breathed into her from Our Spirit. She believed in the words of her Lord and His Books, and she was one of the devoutly obedient.
