Surah Yusuf (Joseph)

Makki · 111 ayahs
12:1 Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book.
12:2 We have sent it down as a Quran in Arabic, so that you may understand.
12:3 We tell you [Muhammad] the best of stories by revealing this Quran to you, though before it you were among those who did not know.
12:4 When Joseph said to his father, “Father, I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon, I saw them bowing down to me.”
12:5 He said, “My son, do not tell your brothers your dream, or they will scheme against you. Satan is an open enemy to people.
12:6 And so your Lord will choose you, teach you how to interpret visions and events, and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it before upon your forefathers Abraham and Isaac. Your Lord is Knowing and Wise.”
12:7 There were certainly signs in Joseph and his brothers for those who ask.
12:8 When they said, “Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are, though we are a strong group. Our father is clearly mistaken.
12:9 Kill Joseph, or throw him out to some land, so your father will turn his face to you alone. After that, you can be righteous people.”
12:10 One of them said, “Do not kill Joseph. Throw him into the hidden depths of the well; some travelers will pick him up, if you must do something.”
12:11 They said, “Father, why do you not trust us with Joseph, when we sincerely want good for him?
12:12 Send him with us tomorrow; he can enjoy himself and play, and we will surely guard him.”
12:13 He said, “It truly saddens me that you take him, and I fear the wolf may eat him while you are not paying attention.”
12:14 They said, “If the wolf eats him while we are a strong group, then we would truly be losers.”
12:15 So when they took him away and all agreed to put him in the hidden depth of the well, We inspired him: “You will surely tell them about this deed of theirs while they do not realize [who you are].”
12:16 They came to their father at nightfall, weeping.
12:17 They said, “Our father, we went racing and left Joseph with our belongings, and the wolf ate him. But you will not believe us, even if we are telling the truth.”
12:18 And they brought fake blood on his shirt. He said, “No. Your own selves have made something seem easy to you. So patience, with grace. Allah [God] is the One whose help is sought against what you describe.”
12:19 A caravan came. They sent their water-drawer, and he lowered his bucket. He said, “Good news! This is a boy!” They kept him hidden as merchandise, and Allah knew what they were doing.
12:20 They sold him for a cheap price, a few counted dirhams, and they had no desire to keep him.
12:21 The man from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, “Treat him well. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we may take him as a son.” And so We established Joseph in the land, and so We might teach him the interpretation of events. Allah is in full control of His affair, but most people do not know.
12:22 When he reached full maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. This is how We reward those who do good.
12:23 The woman in whose house he was tried to seduce him. She locked the doors and said, “Come to me.” He said, “Allah forbid. My master has treated me well. Wrongdoers never succeed.”
12:24 She certainly wanted him, and he would have wanted her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. So it was, that We might turn evil and indecency away from him. He was one of Our chosen servants.
12:25 They both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind. At the door, they found her husband. She said, “What should be the penalty for someone who intended evil against your wife, except imprisonment or a painful punishment?”
12:26 He said, “She tried to seduce me.” A witness from her family testified, “If his shirt is torn from the front, then she has told the truth, and he is one of the liars.”
12:27 “But if his shirt is torn from behind, then she has lied, and he is one of the truthful.”
12:28 When he saw that his shirt was torn from behind, her husband said, “This is part of your schemes, you women. Your scheming is great.”
12:29 “Joseph, turn away from this. And you [his wife], ask forgiveness for your sin; you were indeed in the wrong.”
12:30 Some women in the city said, “The chief official’s wife is trying to seduce her young slave. Love for him has pierced her heart. We see that she is clearly lost.”
12:31 When she heard of their scheming, she sent for them, prepared a banquet for them, and gave each one a knife. Then she told Joseph, “Come out before them.” When they saw him, they were awestruck by him and cut their hands. They said, “Allah forbid! This is not a human being. This is only a noble angel.”
12:32 She said, “That is the one you blamed me for. I did try to seduce him, but he refused to give in. If he does not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned, and he will certainly be one of the humiliated.”
12:33 He said, “My Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they are calling me to. Unless You turn their scheming away from me, I may incline toward them and become one of the ignorant.”
12:34 So his Lord answered him and turned their scheming away from him. He is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
12:35 Then, after they had seen the signs [of his innocence], they decided to imprison him for a time.
12:36 Two young men entered the prison with him. One of them said, “I saw myself pressing grapes for wine.” The other said, “I saw myself carrying bread on my head, and birds were eating from it. Tell us what it means; we see you are one of those who do good.”
12:37 He said, “Before any food you are provided comes to you, I will tell you what it will be. That is part of what my Lord has taught me. I have left the religion of people who do not believe in Allah and who deny the Hereafter.
12:38 And I follow the religion of my fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is not for us to associate anything at all with Allah. That is Allah’s favor to us and to people, but most people are not grateful.
12:39 My two prison companions, are many different lords better, or Allah, the One, the Overpowering?
12:40 You worship, apart from Him, only names that you and your fathers have named. Allah has sent down no authority for them. Judgment belongs to Allah alone. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know.
12:41 My two prison companions, as for one of you, he will serve wine to his master. As for the other, he will be crucified, and birds will eat from his head. The matter about which you both asked has been decided.
12:42 And he said to the one of the two he expected would be saved, “Mention me to your master.” But Satan made him forget to mention him to his master, so he remained in prison for several years.
12:43 The king said, “I saw seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain, and others dry. Chiefs, explain my vision to me, if you can interpret visions.”
12:44 They said, “A jumble of dreams. We do not know how to interpret dreams.”
12:45 Then the one of the two who had been saved, remembering after a time, said, “I will tell you its interpretation, so send me.”
12:46 “Joseph, truthful one, explain to us seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain, and others dry, so that I may return to the people and they may know.”
12:47 He said, “You will plant for seven years as usual. Whatever you harvest, leave it in its ears, except a little of what you eat.
12:48 Then after that will come seven hard years that will consume what you stored ahead for them, except a little of what you keep safe.
12:49 Then after that will come a year in which the people are given rain, and in it they will press their harvest.
12:50 The king said, “Bring him to me.” But when the messenger came to him, he said, “Go back to your master and ask him: what was the matter with the women who cut their hands? My Lord knows their plot well.”
12:51 He said, “What was your affair when you tried to seduce Joseph?” They said, “Allah forbid! We know no evil of him.” The wife of al-Aziz said, “Now the truth has come to light: I tried to seduce him, and he is surely one of the truthful.”
12:52 “That was so he would know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that Allah does not let the schemes of betrayers succeed.”
12:53 “And I do not claim my own self is pure. The self strongly urges evil, except when my Lord shows mercy. My Lord is forgiving, merciful.”
12:54 The king said, “Bring him to me; I will keep him for myself.” Then, when he spoke with him, he said, “Today you are firmly placed with us and trusted.”
12:55 He said, “Put me in charge of the storehouses of the land. I am a careful keeper, and I know what I am doing.”
12:56 And so We established Joseph in the land, to settle in it wherever he wished. We grant Our mercy to whomever We will, and We do not waste the reward of those who do good.
12:57 And the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and kept themselves from evil.
12:58 Joseph’s brothers came and entered his presence. He recognized them, but they did not recognize him.
12:59 When he had prepared their supplies for them, he said, “Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts?”
12:60 “But if you do not bring him to me, you will have no measure from me, and do not come near me.”
12:61 They said, “We will try to get his father to let him go, and we will surely do it.”
12:62 He said to his servants, “Put their trade goods back in their packs, so they may recognize them when they return to their family, and perhaps they will come back.”
12:63 When they returned to their father, they said, “Father, we will be refused grain, so send our brother with us, and we will receive our measure. We will certainly guard him.”
12:64 He said, “Am I to trust you with him any more than I trusted you with his brother before? Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of those who show mercy.”
12:65 When they opened their baggage, they found their trade goods returned to them. They said, “Father, what more could we ask? Here are our trade goods returned to us. We will get provisions for our family, guard our brother, and receive an extra camel-load. That is an easy measure to grant.”
12:66 He said, “I will never send him with you until you give me a pledge by Allah that you will bring him back to me, unless you are completely surrounded.” When they gave him their pledge, he said, “Allah is the guarantor of what we are saying.”
12:67 He said, “My sons, do not enter through one gate; enter through separate gates. I cannot help you against Allah in anything. Judgment belongs only to Allah. In Him I trust, and in Him let all who trust put their trust.”
12:68 When they entered as their father had instructed them, it could not help them at all against Allah. It only fulfilled a concern in Jacob’s heart. He had knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most people do not know.
12:69 When they came in to Joseph, he drew his brother close and said, “I am your brother, so do not grieve over what they have been doing.”
12:70 When he had supplied them with their provisions, he placed the drinking cup in his brother’s pack. Then a caller called out, “People of the caravan, you are thieves!”
12:71 They turned toward them and said, “What are you missing?”
12:72 They said, “We are missing the king’s cup. Whoever brings it will have a camel-load [of grain], and I guarantee it.”
12:73 They said, ‘By Allah, you certainly know we did not come to spread corruption in the land, and we have never been thieves.’
12:74 They [the Egyptians] said, ‘Then what is its penalty, if you are lying?’
12:75 They said, ‘Its penalty is that whoever’s bag it is found in will be taken as repayment for it. That is how we repay wrongdoers.’
12:76 So he began with their bags before his brother’s bag; then he brought it [the cup] out of his brother’s bag. That is how We planned for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother under the king’s law unless Allah willed. We raise whom We will by degrees, and above everyone with knowledge is one who knows more.
12:77 They said, ‘If he steals, a brother of his [Joseph] stole before.’ Joseph kept it to himself and did not reveal it to them. He said inwardly, ‘You are in a worse position, and Allah knows best what you allege.’
12:78 They said, ‘O minister, he has a very old father, so take one of us in his place. We see you as one of those who do good.’
12:79 He said, ‘Allah forbid that we should take anyone except the one with whom we found our property. If we did, we would surely be wrongdoers.’
12:80 When they lost hope of persuading him, they withdrew for a private discussion. The senior one among them said, ‘Do you not know that your father took a pledge from you by Allah, and before this you failed regarding Joseph? I will not leave this land until my father permits me or Allah decides my case; He is the best of judges.’
12:81 Go back to your father and say: Our father, your son has stolen. We testify only to what we knew, and we could not guard against the unseen.
12:82 Ask the people in the town where we were, and the caravan we came back with. We are telling the truth.
12:83 He said, ‘No. Your own selves have talked you into something. So patience, graceful patience. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me [Joseph, his younger brother, and the brother who stayed behind]. He is the All-Knowing, the Wise.’
12:84 He turned away from them and said, ‘Oh, my grief over Joseph!’ His eyes went white from sorrow, while he held his grief in.
12:85 They said, “By Allah, you will never stop remembering Joseph until you become gravely ill or perish.”
12:86 He said, “I only complain of my suffering and grief to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.”
12:87 “My sons, go and search for Joseph and his brother, and do not despair of Allah’s relief. No one despairs of Allah’s relief except people who deny the truth.”
12:88 When they entered upon him, they said, “O high official, hardship has touched us and our family, and we have come with goods of little value. So give us full measure, and be charitable to us. Allah rewards the charitable.”
12:89 He said, “Do you realize what you did to Joseph and his brother when you acted in ignorance?”
12:90 They said, “Are you really Joseph?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has been gracious to us. Whoever is mindful of Allah and is patient, Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.”
12:91 They said, “By Allah, Allah has favored you over us, and we were certainly in the wrong.”
12:92 He said, “No blame will be on you today. Allah will forgive you. He is the most merciful of those who show mercy.”
12:93 “Go with this shirt of mine and lay it over my father’s face; he will regain his sight. Then bring me all your family.”
12:94 When the caravan had set out, their father said, “I can smell Joseph, if only you would not think me feeble-minded.”
12:95 They said, “By Allah, you are still in your old delusion.”
12:96 Then when the bearer of good news arrived, he laid it [the shirt] over his face, and his sight returned. He said, “Did I not tell you that I know from Allah what you do not know?”
12:97 They said, “Our father, ask forgiveness for our sins. We were wrong.”
12:98 He said, “I will ask my Lord to forgive you. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
12:99 When they came in to Joseph, he drew his parents close to him and said, “Enter Egypt, Allah willing, safe and secure.”
12:100 He raised his parents onto the throne, and they fell down before him in prostration. He said, “Father, this is the meaning of my old dream. My Lord has made it come true. He has been good to me: He brought me out of prison and brought you from the desert, after Satan stirred trouble between me and my brothers. My Lord is gentle in what He wills. He is the Knowing, the Wise.”
12:101 “My Lord, You have given me a share of rule and taught me some of the meaning of events. Maker of the heavens and the earth, You are my Protector in this world and the Hereafter. Let me die in submission to You, and join me with the righteous.”
12:102 That is from the hidden news We reveal to you. You were not with them when they agreed on their plan and were plotting.
12:103 Most people will not believe, no matter how much you want them to.
12:104 You ask them no payment for it. It is only a reminder for all peoples.
12:105 How many signs in the heavens and the earth do they pass by, turning away from them?
12:106 Most of them do not believe in Allah without also associating others with Him.
12:107 Do they feel safe from an overwhelming punishment from Allah coming over them, or from the Hour coming on them suddenly while they do not realize?
12:108 Say, “This is my way: I call to Allah with clear insight, I and whoever follows me. Glory be to Allah, and I am not one of those who associate partners with Him.”
12:109 Before you, We sent only men from the people of towns, to whom We revealed. Have they not traveled through the land and seen how those before them ended up? The home of the Hereafter is better for those who are mindful. Will you not use reason?
12:110 Then, when the messengers had lost hope and thought they had been rejected as liars, Our help came to them, and whoever We willed was rescued. Our punishment cannot be turned back from guilty people.
12:111 In their stories there is a lesson for people of understanding. This is not a tale made up, but a confirmation of what came before it, a detailed explanation of all things, and guidance and mercy for people who believe.
