Surah Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds)

وَٱلذَّٰرِيَـٰتِ ذَرْوًا

51:1 By those that scatter far and wide,

فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقْرًا

51:2 then those that carry a load,

فَٱلْجَـٰرِيَـٰتِ يُسْرًا

51:3 then those that move with ease,

فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ أَمْرًا

51:4 then those that distribute the command:

إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌ

51:5 what you are promised is surely true,

وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٌ

51:6 and Judgment will surely happen.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْحُبُكِ

51:7 By the sky full of pathways,

إِنَّكُمْ لَفِى قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍ

51:8 you [Meccan deniers] are surely caught in conflicting talk.

يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَ

51:9 Turned away from this is whoever has been turned away.

قُتِلَ ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَ

51:10 May the liars be destroyed,

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ

51:11 those who are sunk in heedlessness,

يَسْـَٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ

51:12 asking, “When is the Day of Judgment?”

يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ

51:13 the Day they are put through their ordeal in the Fire.

ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

51:14 Taste your ordeal. This is what you used to demand be hurried on.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

51:15 The righteous will be in gardens and springs,

ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ

51:16 receiving what their Lord has given them. Before this, they had been doers of good.

كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ

51:17 They used to sleep only a little of the night,

وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

51:18 and before dawn, they would ask forgiveness.

وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ

51:19 In their wealth was a right for those who asked and those who were deprived.

وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ

51:20 On the earth are signs for those who are certain,

وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ

51:21 and within yourselves as well. Do you not see?

وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ

51:22 In the sky is your provision, and what you are promised.

فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَ

51:23 So by the Lord of the sky and the earth, it [what you are promised] is certainly true, as surely as you speak.

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ

51:24 Has the report reached you of Abraham’s honored guests?

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ

51:25 When they came in to him [Abraham], they said, “Peace.” He answered, “Peace. People I do not know.”

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍ

51:26 Then he slipped away to his family and came back with a fattened calf.

فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ

51:27 He set it before them and said, “Will you not eat?”

فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ

51:28 Then he felt afraid of them. They said, “Do not be afraid,” and gave him good news of a knowledgeable son.

فَأَقْبَلَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ فِى صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ

51:29 Then his wife came forward with a cry, struck her face, and said, “An old barren woman?”

قَالُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

51:30 They said, “That is what your Lord has said. He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.”

۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

51:31 He said, “Then what is your mission, messengers?”

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ

51:32 They said, “We have been sent to a guilty people [Lot’s people],

لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍ

51:33 to send against them stones of clay,

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ

51:34 marked by your Lord for the transgressors.”

فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

51:35 So We brought out the believers who were there.

فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

51:36 But We found there only one household of those who had submitted.

وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَ

51:37 And We left there a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

وَفِى مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ

51:38 And there was a sign in Moses, when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.

فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكْنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَـٰحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ

51:39 But he turned away, backed by his power, and said, “A magician, or a madman!”

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ

51:40 So We seized him and his armies and threw them into the sea; he was blameworthy.

وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَ

51:41 And in Aad [an ancient people], when We sent against them the barren wind.

مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ

51:42 It left nothing it swept over without turning it to dust and decay.

وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ

51:43 And in Thamud [an ancient people], when they were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a while.”

فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ

51:44 But they rebelled against their Lord’s command, so the thunderbolt seized them while they looked on.

فَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ

51:45 They could not even stand, and they could not defend themselves.

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ

51:46 And the people of Noah before them; they were a defiantly disobedient people.

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ

51:47 And the sky We built with power, and We surely make it vast.

وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَـٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَـٰهِدُونَ

51:48 And the earth We spread out; how excellently We laid it out.

وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

51:49 And of everything We created pairs, so you may remember.

فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

51:50 So flee to Allah [God]. I am a clear warner to you from Him.

وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

51:51 And do not set up another god alongside Allah. I am a clear warner to you from Him.

كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ

51:52 In the same way, no messenger came to those before them except that they said, “A magician,” or, “A madman.”

أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ

51:53 Did they pass this down to one another? No, they are an overstepping people.

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍ

51:54 So turn away from them; you are not to be blamed.

وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

51:55 And keep reminding, for the reminder benefits the believers.

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

51:56 I created jinn and humans only to worship Me.

مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ

51:57 I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ

51:58 Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of power, the Strong.

فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصْحَـٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ

51:59 Those who do wrong will have a share like the share of their companions [the earlier deniers], so let them not ask Me to hurry it on.

فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن يَوْمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ

51:60 So woe to those who disbelieve, because of the Day they are promised.
