Was the Earth Created Before the Heavens?

A common objection claims that the Quran contradicts itself about the order of creation: some verses mention the earth before the heavens, while Surah al-Naziat mentions the heaven before the earth is "spread." The answer is not a forced modern reading. It is the classical distinction between the earth's initial creation and its later spreading, furnishing, and preparation.

The alleged contradiction

The critic usually places these verses in tension:

It is He who created for you all that is on the earth. Then He turned to the heaven and fashioned them as seven heavens...

Quran 2:29

Are you a more difficult creation or the heaven? He built it... And after that He spread the earth. He brought forth from it its water and its pasture, and the mountains He set firm, as enjoyment for you and your livestock.

Quran 79:27-33

Surah Fussilat is also cited because it mentions the earth, its mountains and provisions, and then the heaven:

He created the earth in two days... and He placed on it firm mountains above it, blessed it, and determined its sustenance in four days... Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke... So He completed them as seven heavens in two days...

Quran 41:9-12

The objection assumes that all of these passages are describing the same act: the first creation of the earth. That is the mistake.

The key word is "dahaha," not "created"

In Quran 79:30, the verb is dahaha (دحاها). It is not خلقها, "He created it." The well-known lexical meaning of daha al-ard is to spread, extend, or lay out the earth. Lisan al-Arab explains:

دحا الأرض يدحوها دحوا: بسطها

Meaning: "He spread it."

The context confirms this meaning. Immediately after saying that Allah spread the earth, the verses mention:

  • Allah brought forth from it its water and pasture.
  • Allah set its mountains firm.
  • The result was provision and benefit for people and animals.

So Quran 79:30-33 is not saying, "The earth was first created after the heaven." It is saying that after the heaven was built, the earth was spread, furnished, and made ready.

The explanation of Ibn Abbas

This is not a modern apologetic invention. Ibn Abbas was asked about verses that seemed, at first glance, to differ on this very issue. Al-Bukhari records in Sahih al-Bukhari that Ibn Abbas answered by distinguishing between the earth's first creation and its later dahw: Allah created the earth first, then fashioned the heaven, then spread the earth; and he explained that spreading as bringing out its water and pasture and placing its mountains and other features.

This report is a statement of Ibn Abbas, not a marfu hadith from the Prophet (PBUH). But it is authentic as a report preserved by al-Bukhari, and it is directly relevant because Ibn Abbas was addressing the alleged tension itself.

When the verses are read together according to this explanation, the sequence is coherent:

  1. The earth was created in its basic form.
  2. Allah turned to the heaven while it was dukhan - smoke - and fashioned it into seven heavens.
  3. After that, the earth underwent its dahw: its water and pasture were brought forth, its mountains were set firm, and it was prepared for living creatures.

Al-Tabari explains dahaha as spreading the earth, and he transmits this reconciliation from Ibn Abbas. Ibn Kathir also states clearly that the earth was created before the heaven was fashioned, while Quran 79:30 refers to the later spreading and preparation of the earth, not its first creation.

What about Quran 41:9-12?

Quran 41:9-12 gives the account of the earthly realm and the heavenly realm within six days. The phrase "in four days" in Quran 41:10 is inclusive of the first two days of the earth's creation. It means that the earth and its provisions were completed in a total of four days, not two plus four. Otherwise the passage would total eight days, contradicting the Quran's repeated statement that creation was in six days.

The remaining question is whether Quran 41:10 forces every detail of the earth's furnishing to have occurred before the heaven was fashioned. The classical reconciliation says no. The passage completes the discussion of the earth by mentioning its total allotment, then moves to the heaven and its completion. Surah al-Naziat clarifies the chronological point that matters here: the dahw - spreading, bringing out water and pasture, and setting mountains firm - occurred after the heaven was built.

Thus the word "after" in Quran 79:30 can keep its normal meaning. What happened after the heaven was built was not the earth's first creation, but its spreading and preparation.

The heaven as smoke

Quran 41:11 adds an important detail:

Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke...

Quran 41:11

The verse distinguishes between the heaven existing in a state described as dukhan and its later fashioning into seven heavens. The Quranic argument does not require identifying this dukhan with any specific modern cosmological stage. The point is simply that the heavens were completed and ordered after Allah turned to the heaven while it was smoke.

Conclusion

There is no contradiction. The Quran distinguishes between creating the earth and later spreading and furnishing it. The coherent order is: the earth was created in its basic form, the heaven was fashioned into seven heavens, and then the earth was spread out and prepared for life. This is the explanation reported from Ibn Abbas and used by major commentators such as al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir.
