Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow)

Madani · 286 ayahs

2:1 Alif Lam Meem.

2:2 This is the Book, with no doubt in it: a guidance for those who are mindful of Allah [God],

2:3 who believe in the unseen, keep up prayer, and give from what We have provided for them;

2:4 who believe in what has been sent down to you [Muhammad], and what was sent down before you, and are certain of the Hereafter.

2:5 Such people are on guidance from their Lord, and they are the ones who succeed.

2:6 As for those who disbelieve, it is all the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.

2:7 Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and over their eyes is a covering. They will have a great punishment.

2:8 Among the people are some who say, “We believe in Allah and the Last Day,” but they are not believers.

2:9 They try to deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive only themselves, though they do not realize it.

2:10 In their hearts is a disease, so Allah made their disease worse. They will have a painful punishment because they used to lie.

2:11 When they are told, “Do not spread corruption on earth,” they say, “We are only putting things right.”

2:12 No indeed: they are the ones spreading corruption, but they do not realize it.

2:13 And when they [the hypocrites] are told, “Believe as the people have believed,” they say, “Should we believe as the fools have believed?” No indeed, it is they who are the fools, but they do not know.

2:14 When they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe.” But when they are alone with their devils [their leaders in evil], they say, “We are with you; we were only making fun.”

2:15 Allah mocks them and lets them go on in their rebellion, wandering blindly.

2:16 Those are the ones who bought misguidance at the price of guidance. Their trade made no profit, and they were not guided.

2:17 Their likeness is that of someone who lit a fire. When it lit up everything around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.

2:18 Deaf, mute, blind; so they will not turn back.

2:19 Or like a cloudburst from the sky, with darkness, thunder, and lightning in it. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps, fearing death. And Allah surrounds the disbelievers.

2:20 The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Whenever it lights the way for them, they walk in it; when darkness falls over them, they stand still. If Allah had willed, He would have taken away their hearing and their sight. Allah has power over everything.

2:21 People, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, so that you may live in reverence.

2:22 He made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, and sent down water from the sky, bringing out fruits by it as provision for you. So do not set up rivals to Allah when you know.

2:23 If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to Our servant, then produce one chapter like it, and call your witnesses besides Allah, if you are truthful.

2:24 But if you do not, and you will never do it, then guard yourselves against the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

2:25 Give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds: they will have Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are given fruit from them as provision, they will say, “This is what we were given before,” for they will be given things resembling one another. In them they will have purified spouses, and there they will remain forever.

2:26 Allah is not ashamed to set forth an example, even of a mosquito, or of something above it. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord. Those who disbelieve say, “What does Allah mean by this example?” He leads many astray by it and guides many by it, but He leads none astray by it except the rebellious.

2:27 Those who break Allah’s covenant after it has been firmly made, cut what Allah has commanded to be joined, and spread corruption on earth, they are the losers.

2:28 How can you disbelieve in Allah when you had no life, then He gave you life; then He will cause you to die, then bring you to life again; then to Him you will be returned?

2:29 He is the One who created for you everything on earth, all of it; then He turned toward heaven and fashioned it into seven heavens. And He knows everything.

2:30 When your Lord said to the angels, “I am placing on the earth a successor,” they said, “Will You place in it someone who will spread corruption there and shed blood, while we glorify You with praise and declare Your holiness?” He said, “I know what you do not know.”

2:31 He taught Adam the names, all of them; then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful.”

2:32 They said, “Glory be to You. We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.”

2:33 He said, “Adam, tell them their names.” When he had told them their names, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and that I know what you reveal and what you used to conceal?”

2:34 And when We said to the angels, “Prostrate to Adam,” they prostrated, except Iblis [Satan]. He refused, was arrogant, and became one of the disbelievers.

2:35 We said, “Adam, live in the Garden, you and your spouse, and both of you eat from it freely wherever you wish. But do not go near this tree, or you will both become wrongdoers.”

2:36 Then Satan made them both slip from it and brought them out of what they had been in. We said, “Go down, all of you, some of you enemies to others. On the earth you will have a place to settle and enjoyment for a time.”

2:37 Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He turned toward him. He is the One who keeps accepting repentance, the Merciful.

2:38 We said, “Go down from it [the Garden], all of you. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will have no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.

2:39 But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs are the people of the Fire. They will remain in it forever.”

2:40 O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I bestowed on you. Keep My covenant, and I will keep My covenant with you. Me alone you must fear.

2:41 Believe in what I have sent down, confirming the scripture you have, and do not be the first to reject it. Do not trade away My signs for a small price. Me alone you must fear.

2:42 Do not mix truth with falsehood, or hide the truth while you know.

2:43 Establish prayer, give zakah [the obligatory alms], and bow down with those who bow down.

2:44 Do you tell people to be righteous and forget yourselves, while you recite the Book? Do you not reason?

2:45 Seek help through patience and prayer. That is certainly hard except for the humble,

2:46 those who are sure they will meet their Lord, and that to Him they will return.

2:47 O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I bestowed on you, and that I favored you above all peoples.

2:48 And guard yourselves against a Day when no soul can do anything for another, no intercession will be accepted from anyone, no ransom will be taken, and they will not be helped.

2:49 Remember when We saved you [your forefathers] from Pharaoh’s people, who were subjecting you to terrible torment, slaughtering your sons and letting your women live. In that was a great trial from your Lord.

2:50 And when We parted the sea for you, saved you, and drowned Pharaoh’s people while you watched.

2:51 And when We set an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then, after he left, you took up the calf [for worship], and you were doing wrong.

2:52 Then We forgave you after that, so that you might be grateful.

2:53 And when We gave Moses the Book and the standard that separates truth from falsehood, so that you might be guided.

2:54 And when Moses said to his people, “My people, you wronged yourselves by taking up the calf. So turn back to your Creator and kill one another. That is better for you with your Creator.” Then He accepted your repentance. He is the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful.

2:55 And when you said, “Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allah plainly.” So the thunderbolt seized you while you watched.

2:56 Then We raised you after your death, so that you might be grateful.

2:57 And We shaded you with clouds and sent down manna and quail for you: “Eat from the good things We have provided you.” They did not wrong Us; they were only wronging themselves.

2:58 And when We said, “Enter this town and eat from it freely wherever you wish. Enter the gate bowing down, and say, ‘Forgiveness.’ We will forgive your sins, and We will give even more to those who do good.”

2:59 But those who did wrong changed the word to something other than what had been said to them. So We sent down on those who did wrong a punishment from the sky, because they kept defying.

2:60 And when Moses asked for water for his people, We said, “Strike the stone with your staff.” Then twelve springs burst out from it, and each tribe knew its drinking place. “Eat and drink from Allah’s provision, and do not act wickedly on earth, spreading corruption.”

2:61 And when you said, “Moses, we will never put up with one kind of food, so call on your Lord for us to bring out for us some of what the earth grows: its herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions.” He said, “Would you trade what is better for what is lower? Go down to any town; there you will have what you asked for.” Humiliation and poverty were stamped upon them, and they drew anger from Allah. That was because they kept rejecting Allah’s signs and killing the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and kept overstepping.

2:62 Indeed, those who believed, the Jews, the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believed in Allah and the Last Day and did what is right, will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.

2:63 And when We took your covenant and raised the Mount over you: “Take what We have given you with strength, and remember what is in it, so that you may guard yourselves.”

2:64 Then after that you turned away. Had it not been for Allah’s favor upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.

2:65 You certainly knew those among you who overstepped the Sabbath, so We said to them, “Be apes, despised.”

2:66 So We made that punishment a warning example for those present and those after them, and an admonition for those mindful of Allah.

2:67 And when Moses said to his people, “Allah commands you to slaughter a cow [to uncover the killer in the murder case].” They said, “Are you making fun of us?” He said, “I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant.”

2:68 They said, “Call on your Lord for us to make clear to us what it is.” He said, “He says it is a cow neither old nor young, but between the two. So do what you are commanded.”

2:69 They said, “Call on your Lord for us to make clear to us what color it is.” He said, “He says it is a yellow cow, bright in color, pleasing to those who see it.”

2:70 They said, “Call on your Lord for us to make clear to us what it is; cows look alike to us, and, if Allah wills, we will be guided.”

2:71 He said, “He says it is a cow not trained for work, plowing the land or watering the fields; sound, with no blemish on it.” They said, “Now you have brought the truth.” So they slaughtered it, though they almost did not.

2:72 And when you killed a person and disputed over it, Allah was bringing out what you were hiding [the killer’s identity].

2:73 So We said, “Strike the slain man with part of the cow.” Like this Allah brings the dead to life and shows you His signs, so that you may use your reason.

2:74 Then, after that, your hearts hardened. They became like stones, or even harder. Some stones burst open and rivers flow from them; some split and water comes out; and some fall down in awe of Allah. Allah is not unaware of what you do.

2:75 Do you [believers] really hope they will believe you, when a group of them used to hear the words of Allah, then distort them after they had understood them, while they knew?

2:76 When they meet those who believe, they say, “We believe.” But when they are alone with one another, they say, “Do you tell them what Allah has disclosed to you, so they can use it to argue against you before your Lord? Do you not understand?”

2:77 Do they not know that Allah knows what they hide and what they make public?

2:78 And among them are unlettered people who do not know the Scripture, only wishful claims. They do nothing but guess.

2:79 So woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands, then say, “This is from Allah,” to sell it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.

2:80 They say, “The Fire will never touch us except for a few numbered days.” Say, “Have you taken a covenant from Allah, so Allah will never break His covenant, or are you saying about Allah what you do not know?”

2:81 No indeed. Whoever earns evil and is surrounded by his sin, those are the people of the Fire. They will remain there forever.

2:82 But those who believe and do righteous deeds, those are the people of the Garden. They will remain there forever.

2:83 And when We took the covenant of the Children of Israel: “Worship no one but Allah; be good to parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy; speak kindly to people; establish prayer; and give zakah.” Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you kept refusing.

2:84 And when We took your covenant: “Do not shed one another’s blood, and do not drive one another out of your homes.” Then you accepted it, and you were witnesses.

2:85 Then here you are: you kill your own people and drive a group of your own from their homes, helping one another against them in sin and aggression. Yet if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, even though driving them out was forbidden to you. Do you believe in part of the Book and deny part of it? What reward is there for those of you who do that except disgrace in the life of this world? And on the Day of Resurrection they will be returned to the severest punishment. Allah is not unaware of what you do.

2:86 Those are the ones who bought the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter. The punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be helped.

2:87 We gave Moses the Book and sent messengers after him in succession. We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. So is it that whenever a messenger came to you with what you yourselves did not desire, you acted arrogantly? Some you denied, and some you killed.

2:88 They said, “Our hearts are covered.” No, Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so little is what they believe.

2:89 And when a Book came to them from Allah, confirming what they already had, though before that they used to pray for victory over those who disbelieved, when what they recognized came to them, they denied it. So Allah’s curse is upon the disbelievers.

2:90 How evil was the price for which they sold themselves: to deny what Allah sent down, resentful that Allah sends down His favor upon whichever servant of His He wills. So they brought upon themselves anger upon anger, and for the disbelievers there is a humiliating punishment.

2:91 And when they are told, “Believe in what Allah has sent down,” they say, “We believe in what was sent down to us,” while they deny what came after it, though it is the truth confirming what they have. Say, “Then why did you kill Allah’s prophets before, if you were believers?”

2:92 Moses came to you with clear signs; then, after he was gone, you took up the calf, and you were wrongdoers.

2:93 And when We took your covenant and raised the Mount over you: “Hold firmly to what We have given you, and listen.” They said, “We hear, and we disobey.” Because of their disbelief, love of the calf was soaked into their hearts. Say, “How evil is what your faith commands you, if you are believers.”

2:94 Say, “If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is yours alone, to the exclusion of all other people, then wish for death, if you are truthful.”

2:95 But they will never wish for it, because of what they have done. Allah knows the wrongdoers.

2:96 You will surely find them the greediest of all people for life, even more than those who associate partners with Allah. Each one of them would love to be granted a thousand years, but being granted such a life would not move him away from the punishment. Allah sees what they do.

2:97 Say, “Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel, he is the one who brought it down to your heart by Allah’s permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and good news for the believers.”

2:98 Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael, then Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.

2:99 We have certainly sent down to you clear verses, and none denies them except the defiantly disobedient.

2:100 Is it that whenever they make a covenant, a group of them throws it away? No, most of them do not believe.

2:101 And when a messenger from Allah came to them, confirming what they already had, a group of those given the Book threw Allah’s Book behind their backs as if they knew nothing.

2:102 They followed what the devils recited during Solomon’s reign. Solomon did not disbelieve; rather, the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. But those two would not teach anyone until they said, “We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.” Yet people learned from them what could separate a man from his wife. But they could not harm anyone with it except by Allah’s permission. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them. They knew well that whoever bought it would have no share in the Hereafter. How evil was what they sold themselves for, if only they knew.

2:103 If they had believed and been mindful of Allah, a reward from Allah would have been better, if only they knew.

2:104 O you who believe, do not say, “Give us your attention”; say, “Look toward us,” and listen. For the disbelievers there is a painful punishment.

2:105 Those who disbelieve among the People of the Book, and the idolaters, do not wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allah singles out whom He wills for His mercy, and Allah is the Possessor of great favor.

2:106 Whatever verse We replace or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over everything?

2:107 Do you not know that Allah alone owns the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and that besides Allah you have no protector and no helper?

2:108 Or do you want to question your Messenger as Moses was questioned before? Whoever trades faith for disbelief has lost the straight way.

2:109 Many of the People of the Book wish they could turn you back into disbelievers after your faith, out of envy from within themselves, even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah brings His command. Allah has power over everything.

2:110 Establish prayer and give the obligatory alms. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with Allah. Allah sees everything you do.

2:111 They say, “No one will enter the Garden unless he is a Jew or a Christian.” That is their wishful thinking. Say, “Bring your proof, if you are truthful.”

2:112 No. Whoever submits himself to Allah and does good will have his reward with his Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.

2:113 The Jews say, “The Christians have nothing to stand on,” and the Christians say, “The Jews have nothing to stand on,” though they recite the Book. Those who do not know have said the same kind of thing. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection over what they used to differ about.

2:114 Who is more unjust than someone who prevents Allah’s places of worship from having His name mentioned in them, and works to ruin them? Such people have no right to enter them except in fear. For them there is disgrace in this world, and for them in the Hereafter there is a great punishment.

2:115 To Allah belong the east and the west; wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.

2:116 They say, “Allah has taken a child.” Glory be to Him! Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth; all are humbly obedient to Him.

2:117 He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decides a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.

2:118 Those who do not know say, “Why does Allah not speak to us, or a sign come to us?” Those before them said the same kind of thing. Their hearts are alike. We have made the signs clear for people who are certain.

2:119 We have sent you with the truth, as a bearer of good news and a warner. You will not be asked about the people of the Blazing Fire.

2:120 The Jews will never be pleased with you, nor the Christians, until you follow their way. Say, “Allah’s guidance is the true guidance.” If you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you will have no protector or helper against Allah.

2:121 Those to whom We have given the Book, who recite it as it deserves to be recited, they believe in it. Whoever disbelieves in it, they are the losers.

2:122 O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I bestowed on you, and that I favored you above all peoples.

2:123 Guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will avail another at all, no compensation will be accepted from it, no intercession will benefit it, and they will not be helped.

2:124 And when Abraham’s Lord tested him with certain commands, and he fulfilled them, He said, “I am making you a leader for people.” He said, “And from my descendants?” He said, “My covenant does not reach wrongdoers.”

2:125 And when We made the House [the Ka‘bah] a place people return to and a sanctuary: “Take Abraham’s standing-place as a place of prayer.” And We charged Abraham and Ishmael: “Purify My House for those who circle it, those who stay in devotion, and those who bow and prostrate.”

2:126 And when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this a secure city, and provide its people with fruits, whoever among them believes in Allah and the Last Day.” He said, “And whoever disbelieves, I will let him enjoy himself a little; then I will drive him to the punishment of the Fire. What an evil destination.”

2:127 And when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House, along with Ishmael: “Our Lord, accept this from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”

2:128 “Our Lord, make us both submitted to You, and from our descendants a community submitted to You. Show us our rites, and turn toward us. You are the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful.”

2:129 “Our Lord, raise up among them a messenger from themselves, who will recite Your verses to them, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are the Almighty, the Wise.”

2:130 Who would turn away from Abraham’s religion except someone who fools himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he is surely among the righteous.

2:131 When his Lord said to him, “Submit,” he said, “I have submitted to the Lord of all worlds.”

2:132 Abraham instructed his sons to this, and so did Jacob: “My sons, Allah has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except in submission.”

2:133 Or were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his sons, “What will you worship after me?” They said, “We will worship your God and the God of your forefathers, Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac, one God, and to Him we submit.”

2:134 That was a community that has passed away. It has what it earned, and you have what you earned. You will not be asked about what they used to do.

2:135 They say, “Be Jews or Christians and you will be guided.” Say, “No, the way of Abraham, the upright one. He was not one of those who associated partners with Allah.”

2:136 Say, “We believe in Allah, in what was sent down to us, in what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.”

2:137 If they believe in the same as you have believed in, then they are guided. But if they turn away, then they are only in opposition. Allah will be enough for you against them. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

2:138 Allah’s mark, and who leaves a better mark than Allah? We worship Him alone.

2:139 Say, “Do you argue with us about Allah, when He is our Lord and your Lord? We have our deeds, and you have your deeds. We are devoted to Him alone.”

2:140 Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, “Who knows better, you or Allah?” Who does greater wrong than someone who conceals testimony from Allah that he has? Allah is not unaware of what you do.

2:141 That was a community that has passed away. It has what it earned, and you have what you earned. You will not be asked about what they used to do.

2:142 The foolish among the people will say, “What has turned them from the prayer direction they used to face [Jerusalem]?” Say, “To Allah belong the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.”

2:143 And so We made you a community of the middle way, so that you may be witnesses over people and the Messenger may be a witness over you. We appointed the prayer direction you had faced only to make clear who follows the Messenger and who turns back on his heels. It was certainly a heavy test, except for those Allah guided. Allah would never let your faith [your prayers before the direction changed] go to waste. Allah is Gentle with people, Merciful.

2:144 We have indeed seen your face turning toward the sky. We will surely turn you to a prayer direction that pleases you. So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Book certainly know that this is the truth from their Lord. Allah is not unaware of what they do.

2:145 Even if you brought every sign to those who were given the Scripture, they would not follow your prayer direction. Nor will you follow their prayer direction, and they do not follow one another’s prayer direction. If you followed their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would then be among the wrongdoers.

2:146 Those We gave the Scripture recognize this as they recognize their own sons, yet a group of them hide the truth while they know.

2:147 The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.

2:148 Everyone has a direction he turns toward, so race toward good deeds. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together. Allah has power over everything.

2:149 From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is the truth from your Lord, and Allah is not unaware of what you do.

2:150 From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it, so people will have no argument against you [over the change in prayer direction], except those among them who do wrong. Do not fear them; fear Me, so that I may complete My favor upon you, and so that you may be guided.

2:151 Just as We sent among you a messenger from yourselves, reciting Our verses to you, purifying you, teaching you the Book and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.

2:152 So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me.

2:153 You who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Allah is with those who are patient.

2:154 Do not say of those killed in Allah’s cause, “They are dead.” Rather, they are alive, but you do not perceive it.

2:155 We will surely test you with a measure of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits. Give good news to those who are patient,

2:156 those who, when a misfortune strikes them, say, “We belong to Allah, and to Him we return.”

2:157 Those [who meet disaster by saying, ‘We belong to Allah, and to Him we return’] have blessings from their Lord and mercy. Those are the truly guided.

2:158 Safa and Marwah [two hills in Mecca] are among Allah’s sacred rites. So whoever makes pilgrimage to the House, or the lesser pilgrimage, has no blame for walking between them. And whoever does good willingly, Allah is Appreciative, Knowing.

2:159 Those who conceal the clear proofs and guidance We sent down, after We made it clear to people in the Scripture, are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse.

2:160 Except those who repent, make amends, and make the truth clear. I will accept their repentance, for I am the Accepter of Repentance, the Merciful.

2:161 Those who disbelieve and die while still disbelievers, upon them is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.

2:162 They will remain in it. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be given any reprieve.

2:163 Your God is one God. There is no god but Him, the Most Compassionate, the Merciful.

2:164 In the creation of the heavens and the earth; the alternation of night and day; the ships that sail the sea with what benefits people; the water Allah sends down from the sky, bringing the earth to life after its death and spreading every kind of creature through it; the changing of the winds; and the clouds held in service between sky and earth, there are signs for people who use reason.

2:165 Yet among people are those who take others besides Allah as equals, loving them as one loves Allah. But those who believe have stronger love for Allah. If only those who did wrong could see, when they see the punishment, that all power belongs to Allah, and that Allah is severe in punishment.

2:166 When those who were followed disown those who followed them, and they see the punishment, and all ties between them are cut off.

2:167 Those who followed will say, “If only we had another turn, we would disown them just as they disowned us.” That is how Allah will show them their deeds as regrets for them, and they will not come out of the Fire.

2:168 O people, eat from what is on earth, lawful and good, and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. He is a clear enemy to you.

2:169 He [Satan] only commands you to evil and shameful things, and to say about Allah what you do not know.

2:170 When they are told, “Follow what Allah has sent down,” they say, “No, we follow what we found our fathers upon.” Even if their fathers understood nothing and were not guided?

2:171 The likeness of those who disbelieve is like someone shouting at what hears nothing but calls and cries. Deaf, mute, blind, so they do not understand.

2:172 You who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him alone you worship.

2:173 He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, pork, and what has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced by necessity, not seeking it and not going beyond the limit, has no sin upon him. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:174 Those who conceal what Allah has sent down of the Scripture and sell it for a small price, those are eating nothing into their bellies but Fire. Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Judgment, nor purify them, and they will have a painful punishment.

2:175 Those are the ones who bought being lost instead of guidance, and punishment instead of forgiveness. What could make them so patient for the Fire?

2:176 That is because Allah sent down the Scripture with the truth. Those who differ over the Scripture are in deep opposition.

2:177 Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west [in prayer]. Rather, righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Scripture, and the prophets; who gives wealth, though he loves it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask, and to free people from bondage; who establishes prayer and gives the obligatory alms; who fulfill their covenant when they make one; and who are patient in suffering, hardship, and the time of battle. Those are the ones who are true, and those are the ones mindful of Allah.

2:178 You who believe, legal retaliation is prescribed for you in cases of the slain: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But if the offender is pardoned anything by his brother [the victim’s heir], then the claim should be pursued fairly and payment made to him with excellence. That is a lightening from your Lord and a mercy. Whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment.

2:179 In legal retaliation there is life for you, people of understanding, so that you may guard yourselves.

2:180 It is prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you, if he leaves wealth, to make a will for parents and close relatives with fairness, a duty upon those mindful of Allah.

2:181 Then whoever changes it [the bequest] after hearing it, its sin falls only on those who change it. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

2:182 But whoever has reason to fear bias or wrongdoing from a testator, then sets things right between the parties, no sin falls on him. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:183 You who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become mindful.

2:184 for a limited number of days. Whoever among you is sick or on a journey must make up the same number on other days. Those who are able to fast only with hardship owe compensation: feeding one poor person. Whoever volunteers more good, it is better for him; but fasting is better for you, if only you knew.

2:185 Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for people, with clear proofs of guidance and the criterion. So whoever of you is present for the month must fast it, and whoever is sick or on a journey must make up the same number on other days. Allah wants ease for you, not hardship, so that you complete the number, magnify Allah for guiding you, and perhaps give thanks.

2:186 When My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the caller’s call when he calls Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, so that they may be guided.

2:187 On the nights of fasting, it has been made lawful for you to have relations with your wives. They are clothing for you, and you are clothing for them. Allah knew that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you and pardoned you. Now have relations with them, and seek what Allah has written for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread; then complete the fast until night. Do not have relations with them while you are in retreat in the mosques. These are Allah’s limits, so do not come near them. In this way Allah makes His verses clear to people, so that they may become mindful.

2:188 Do not consume one another’s wealth wrongfully, nor offer it to judges so that, in sin and knowingly, you consume a portion of other people’s wealth.

2:189 They ask you about the new moons. Say: They are markers of time for people and for the Hajj. Righteousness is not that you enter houses from their backs; righteousness is in being mindful. Enter houses by their doors, and be mindful of Allah, so that you may succeed.

2:190 Fight in Allah’s way those who fight you, but do not overstep. Allah does not love those who overstep.

2:191 Kill them [those fighting you] wherever you come upon them, and drive them out from where they drove you out. Persecution is worse than killing. Do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there; but if they fight you, then kill them. That is the recompense of the disbelievers.

2:192 But if they stop, then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:193 Fight them until there is no oppression and devotion belongs to Allah. If they stop, then let there be no hostility except against the wrongdoers.

2:194 The sacred month is for the sacred month, and violations of sacred limits are subject to equal response. Whoever attacks you, answer him in the same measure as he attacked you. Fear Allah, and know that Allah is with those who fear Him.

2:195 Spend in the way of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into ruin by your own hands. Do good; Allah loves those who do good.

2:196 Complete the Hajj and the Umrah for Allah. If you are held back [from completing them], then offer whatever sacrificial animal is easy, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place of sacrifice. If any of you is ill or has a head ailment, then a ransom is due: fasting, charity, or a sacrifice. When you are safe again, whoever joins Umrah to Hajj should offer whatever sacrificial animal is easy; but whoever cannot obtain one must fast three days during Hajj and seven when you return. That is ten in all. That is for whoever’s family is not living near the Sacred Mosque. Fear Allah, and know that Allah is severe in punishment.

2:197 Hajj is in well-known months. Whoever commits himself to Hajj during them must have no sexual intimacy, no disobedience, and no quarreling during Hajj. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Take provisions, but the best provision is mindfulness. Fear Me, people of understanding.

2:198 There is no blame on you for seeking bounty from your Lord. When you move on from Arafat, remember Allah at the Sacred Monument. Remember Him as He guided you, though before that you had been among those who had lost their way.

2:199 Then move on from where the people move on, and ask Allah for forgiveness. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:200 When you have completed your rites, remember Allah as you remember your forefathers, or with even stronger remembrance. Some people say, “Our Lord, give us in this world,” and they will have no share in the Hereafter.

2:201 And some of them say, “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.”

2:202 Those will have a share of what they earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning.

2:203 Remember Allah during numbered days. Whoever hurries off after two days has no sin on him, and whoever stays longer has no sin on him, for whoever fears Allah. Fear Allah, and know that to Him you will be gathered.

2:204 Among people is someone whose speech in this worldly life impresses you [Prophet], and he calls Allah to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.

2:205 When he turns away, he rushes through the land to spread corruption in it and destroy crops and offspring. Allah does not love corruption.

2:206 And when he is told, “Fear Allah” pride drives him deeper into sin. Hell is enough for him, what an evil resting place.

2:207 And among people is one who gives his own self, seeking Allah’s pleasure. Allah is gentle with His servants.

2:208 You who believe, enter into submission completely, and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. He is a clear enemy to you.

2:209 But if you slip after the clear proofs have come to you, then know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.

2:210 Are they waiting for anything but for Allah to come to them in canopies of cloud, with the angels, and for the matter to be settled? To Allah all matters return.

2:211 Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever changes Allah’s favor after it has come to him, Allah is severe in punishment.

2:212 The life of this world has been made alluring to those who disbelieve, and they mock those who believe. But those who are mindful of Allah will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.

2:213 Mankind was one community. Then Allah sent the prophets as bearers of good news and as warners, and sent down with them the Book in truth, to judge between people over what they differed about. None differed over it except those who had been given it, after clear proofs had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. Then Allah guided those who believed, by His permission, to the truth they had differed over. Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.

2:214 Or did you think you would enter the Garden before there came to you the like of what came to those who passed before you? Hardship and distress touched them, and they were shaken until the Messenger and those who believed with him said, “When is Allah’s help?” Surely, Allah’s help is near.

2:215 They ask you what they should spend. Say, “Whatever good you spend should go to parents, close relatives, orphans, the needy, and stranded travelers. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it well.”

2:216 Fighting has been prescribed for you, though it is hateful to you. You may dislike something while it is good for you, and you may love something while it is bad for you. Allah knows, and you do not know.

2:217 They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say, “Fighting in it is a grave matter, but blocking people from Allah’s way, rejecting Him, barring them from the Sacred Mosque, and driving its people out of it are graver with Allah. Persecution is worse than killing.” They will keep fighting you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can. Whoever among you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, their deeds have come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter. They are the people of the Fire, and they will remain in it forever.

2:218 Those who believed, emigrated, and strove in Allah’s way, those are the ones who hope for Allah’s mercy. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:219 They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, “In both there is great sin and some benefit for people, but their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “What you can spare.” In this way Allah makes the signs clear to you, so that you may think,

2:220 about this world and the Hereafter. They ask you about orphans. Say, “Managing their affairs well is best. If you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers.” Allah knows the one who corrupts from the one who sets things right. If Allah had willed, He could have put you in hardship. Allah is Mighty, Wise.

2:221 Do not marry polytheist women until they believe. A believing enslaved woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she pleases you. And do not give [believing women] in marriage to polytheist men until they believe. A believing enslaved man is better than a polytheist man, even if he pleases you. Those people invite to the Fire, while Allah invites to the Garden and forgiveness by His permission. He makes His signs clear to people so they may take heed.

2:222 They ask you about menstruation. Say, “It is harm, so keep away from sexual intercourse with women during menstruation, and do not approach them until they are clean. When they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has commanded you.” Allah loves those who keep turning back to Him, and He loves those who purify themselves.

2:223 Your wives are a field for you, so come to your field however you wish, and send ahead for yourselves. Be mindful of Allah, and know that you will meet Him. Give good news to the believers.

2:224 Do not make Allah, through your oaths, a barrier to doing good, being mindful, and making peace between people. Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

2:225 Allah will not hold you to account for careless words in your oaths, but He will hold you to account for what your hearts have earned. Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.

2:226 Those who swear off their wives must wait four months. If they return, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

2:227 But if they resolve on divorce, Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

2:228 Divorced women shall wait by themselves for three quruʾ [menstrual periods or periods of purity]. It is not lawful for them to hide what Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and the Last Day. Their husbands have more right to take them back during that time, if they want reconciliation. Women have rights like the obligations upon them, according to what is recognized, and men have a degree over them. Allah is Mighty, Wise.

2:229 Divorce [with the right to take her back] is twice. After that, either keep her in a fair way or let her go with kindness. It is not lawful for you to take back anything you gave them [as a bridal gift], unless both fear they cannot keep the limits set by Allah. If you fear that the two of them cannot keep the limits set by Allah, then there is no blame on either of them for what she gives to release herself. These are the limits set by Allah, so do not cross them. Whoever crosses the limits set by Allah, those are the wrongdoers.

2:230 Then if he divorces her [a third time], she is not lawful for him after that until she marries another husband. If he then divorces her, there is no blame on the two of them if they return to each other, provided they think they can keep the limits set by Allah. These are the limits set by Allah; He makes them clear for people who know.

2:231 When you divorce women and they are near the end of their waiting period, either keep them in a fair way or let them go in a fair way. Do not keep them to harm them and transgress. Whoever does that has wronged himself. Do not treat Allah’s verses as a joke. Remember Allah’s favor on you, and what He sent down to you of the Book and wisdom, by which He instructs you. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah knows everything.

2:232 When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, do not block them [you guardians] from marrying their former husbands, when they have agreed between themselves in a fair way. This is an instruction for whoever among you believes in Allah and the Last Day. That is purer and cleaner for you. Allah knows, and you do not know.

2:233 Mothers shall nurse their children for two full years, for whoever wants to complete the nursing. The father must provide their food and clothing in a fair way. No soul is burdened beyond its capacity. No mother should be harmed because of her child, and no father because of his child. The heir has the same duty. If the two of them want to wean the child by mutual agreement and consultation, there is no blame on them. And if you want to have your children nursed by someone else, there is no blame on you, as long as you pay what you agreed in a fair way. Be mindful of Allah, and know that Allah sees what you do.

2:234 Those of you who die and leave wives behind, the wives shall wait by themselves for four months and ten days. When they reach the end of their term, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in a fair way. Allah is fully aware of what you do.

2:235 There is no blame on you for hinting at a marriage proposal to women [widows in their waiting period], or for keeping it to yourselves. Allah knows that you will think of them. But do not make a secret promise to them, only speak proper words. Do not resolve the marriage bond until the prescribed term reaches its end. Know that Allah knows what is within yourselves, so beware of Him. And know that Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.

2:236 There is no blame on you if you divorce women before you have had marital contact with them or fixed a dowry for them. Provide for them: the wealthy according to his means, and the one with little according to his means, a fair provision, a duty on those who do good.

2:237 If you divorce them before you have had marital contact with them, but you have already fixed a dowry for them, then give half of what you fixed, unless the women waive it, or the one in whose hand is the marriage bond waives it. To waive is closer to mindfulness of Allah. Do not forget generosity between yourselves. Allah sees what you do.

2:238 Guard the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devoted obedience.

2:239 If you are afraid, then pray on foot or riding. When you are safe again, remember Allah as He taught you what you did not know.

2:240 Those of you who die and leave wives behind should leave a bequest for their wives: provision for a year, without driving them out. But if they leave, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in a fair way. Allah is Mighty, Wise.

2:241 Divorced women are also entitled to a fair provision, a duty on the righteous.

2:242 That is how Allah makes His signs clear to you, so that you may use your reason.

2:243 Have you not considered those who left their homes in the thousands, fearing death? Allah said to them, “Die,” then brought them back to life. Allah is full of favor to people, but most people are not grateful.

2:244 Fight in the way of Allah, and know that Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

2:245 Who will lend Allah a good loan, so He may multiply it for him many times over? Allah withholds and gives freely, and to Him you will be returned.

2:246 Have you not considered the leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, “Appoint a king for us, so we may fight in the way of Allah”? He said, “Could it be that, if fighting is prescribed for you, you will not fight?” They said, “Why would we not fight in the way of Allah, when we have been driven from our homes and our children?” But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. And Allah knows the wrongdoers.

2:247 Their prophet said to them, “Allah has appointed Talut as king over you.” They said, “How can he have kingship over us, when we have more right to kingship than he does, and he has not been given great wealth?” He said, “Allah has chosen him over you and increased him greatly in knowledge and stature. Allah gives His kingdom to whom He wills, and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.”

2:248 Their prophet said to them, “The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, with tranquility from your Lord inside it, and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron left behind. The angels will carry it. In that is surely a sign for you, if you are believers.”

2:249 When Talut set out with the forces, he said, “Allah will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not with me, and whoever does not taste it is with me, except someone who scoops up a handful with his hand.” But they drank from it, except for a few of them. When he and those who believed with him crossed it, they said, “We have no strength today against Jalut and his troops.” Those who were sure they would meet Allah said, “How many a small company has defeated a large company by Allah’s permission. And Allah is with the patient.”

2:250 When they came out to face Jalut and his troops, they said, “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our feet firm, and help us against the disbelieving people.”

2:251 So they defeated them by Allah’s permission, and David killed Jalut. Allah gave David kingship and wisdom, and taught him whatever He willed. If Allah did not repel some people by means of others, the earth would have been ruined. But Allah is full of favor to all worlds.

2:252 These are the signs of Allah. We recite them to you in truth, and you are certainly one of the messengers.

2:253 Those messengers: We favored some over others. Among them were those Allah spoke to, and others He raised in rank. We gave Jesus son of Mary the clear proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. If Allah had willed, those who came after those messengers would not have fought one another after clear proofs had come to them. But they differed: some of them believed, and some denied. If Allah had willed, they would not have fought one another. But Allah does what He intends.

2:254 You who believe, spend from what We have provided you before a Day comes when there will be no trade, no close friendship, and no intercession. The deniers are the ones who do wrong.

2:255 Allah: there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. No drowsiness overtakes Him, and no sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they grasp none of His knowledge except what He wills. His Seat extends over the heavens and the earth, and guarding them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.

2:256 There is no compulsion in religion. Right guidance has become clear from error. So whoever rejects false powers and believes in Allah has grasped the firmest handhold, one that will not break. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

2:257 Allah is the guardian of those who believe. He brings them out of darkness into light. As for those who deny, their guardians are false powers; they bring them out of light into darkness. Those are the people of the Fire; they will remain in it.

2:258 Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord because Allah had given him kingship? Abraham said, “My Lord is the One who gives life and causes death.” He said, “I give life and cause death.” Abraham said, “Allah brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west.” Then the one who denied was stunned. Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.

2:259 Or consider the one who passed by a town lying in ruins, its roofs caved in. He said, “How will Allah bring this back to life after its death?” So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him. He was asked, “How long did you remain?” He said, “I remained a day, or part of a day.” He said, “No, you remained a hundred years. Look at your food and drink; they have not spoiled. And look at your donkey, so We may make you a sign for people. Look at the bones [of your donkey], how We raise them, then clothe them with flesh.” When it became clear to him, he said, “I know that Allah has power over everything.”

2:260 And when Abraham said, “My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.” He said, “Do you not believe?” Abraham said, “Yes, but so my heart may be at peace.” He said, “Take four birds and bring them close to you, then place a piece of them on each hill. Then call them; they will come rushing to you. And know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.”

2:261 The example of those who spend their wealth for Allah’s cause is like a grain that grows seven ears, with a hundred grains in each ear. Allah multiplies for whom He wills. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.

2:262 Those who spend their wealth for Allah’s cause, then do not follow what they spent with reminders of their generosity or with hurt, will have their reward with their Lord. There will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.

2:263 A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by hurt. Allah is Self-Sufficient, Forbearing.

2:264 You who believe, do not cancel out your charities with reminders of generosity and hurt, like someone who spends his wealth to be seen by people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like a smooth rock with dust on it: heavy rain hits it and leaves it bare. They will have no hold on anything they earned. Allah does not guide people who deny the truth.

2:265 The example of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s pleasure and out of firm conviction is like a garden on high ground. Heavy rain falls on it, so it gives double its harvest. If heavy rain does not fall, then a drizzle is enough. Allah sees all that you do.

2:266 Would any of you like to have a garden of date palms and grapevines, with rivers flowing beneath it and every kind of fruit in it, then old age overtakes him while his children are still weak, and a fiery whirlwind strikes it and it burns? In this way Allah makes the signs clear to you, so that you may think.

2:267 Believers, spend from the good things you have earned and from what We have brought out of the earth for you. Do not aim for the bad part to give away, when you yourselves would not take it unless you overlooked its faults. Know that Allah is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

2:268 Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to shameful conduct, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. Allah is Boundless, Knowing.

2:269 He gives wisdom to whom He wills. Whoever is given wisdom has been given abundant good. But only people of understanding take this to heart.

2:270 Whatever you spend, or whatever vow you make, Allah knows it. The wrongdoers will have no helpers.

2:271 If you make charity public, that is good. But if you keep it hidden and give it to the poor, that is better for you, and He will remove some of your evil deeds from you. Allah is fully aware of what you do.

2:272 You [Prophet] are not responsible for guiding them; Allah guides whom He wills. Whatever good you spend is for yourselves, and you spend only seeking Allah’s Face. Whatever good you spend will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.

2:273 Let it be for the poor who are held back in Allah’s way and cannot travel through the land. The unaware person thinks they are rich because of their restraint. You recognize them by their marks; they do not beg people insistently. Whatever good you spend, Allah knows it.

2:274 Those who spend their wealth by night and day, secretly and openly, will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will be on them, nor will they grieve.

2:275 Those who take interest will rise only like someone Satan has driven mad by his touch. That is because they say, “Trade is just like interest.” But Allah has permitted trade and forbidden interest. Whoever receives a warning from his Lord and stops may keep what has passed, and his case is with Allah. But whoever returns, they are the people of the Fire; there they will remain.

2:276 Allah wipes out interest and grows charities. Allah does not love any ungrateful sinner.

2:277 Indeed, those who believe, do good, establish prayer, and give the zakah, their reward is with their Lord. No fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.

2:278 O you who believe, be mindful of Allah, and leave what remains of usury, if you are believers.

2:279 If you do not, then be warned of war from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal: you do no wrong, and you are not wronged.

2:280 If the debtor is in hardship, then grant a delay until ease comes. And if you waive it as charity, that is better for you, if you only knew.

2:281 Be mindful of a Day when you will be brought back to Allah. Then every soul will be repaid in full for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.

2:282 O you who believe, when you contract a debt with one another for a fixed term, write it down. Let a scribe write between you with justice. No scribe should refuse to write as Allah has taught him, so let him write. Let the one who owes the debt dictate, let him be mindful of Allah, his Lord, and let him not reduce any of it. If the one who owes the debt is lacking understanding, weak, or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate with justice. Call two witnesses from among your men; if there are not two men, then one man and two women from witnesses you approve, so that if one of the two women forgets, the other can remind her. Witnesses should not refuse when they are called. Do not grow weary of writing it down, small or large, until its due date. That is more just with Allah, stronger for testimony, and closer to preventing doubt, unless it is an immediate trade you carry out among yourselves; then there is no blame on you if you do not write it. Take witnesses when you sell to one another. No scribe or witness is to be harmed; if you do that, it is sinful conduct in you. Be mindful of Allah, and Allah teaches you. Allah knows everything.

2:283 If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then let there be a pledge held in hand. But if one of you trusts another, let the one entrusted return his trust, and let him be mindful of Allah, his Lord. Do not conceal testimony. Whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. Allah knows what you do.

2:284 To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or hide it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. Allah has power over everything.

2:285 The Messenger believes in what was sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each believes in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers: “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord; to You is the return.”

2:286 Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. It has what it earned, and against it is what it earned. “Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not place on us a burden like the one You placed on those before us. Our Lord, do not load us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelieving people.”
