46:1 Ha Meem.
46:2 The Book is sent down from Allah [God], the Almighty, the Wise.
46:3 We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything between them except in truth, and for a set term. But those who disbelieve turn away from what they are warned about.
46:4 Say, “Have you considered what you call upon besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth. Or do they have a share in the heavens? Bring me a book before this [Qur’an], or some trace of knowledge, if you are truthful.”
46:5 Who is more lost than someone who calls upon, besides Allah, those who will not answer him until the Day of Resurrection, and who are unaware of their calls?
46:6 When people are gathered, they [the ones called upon] will be enemies to them, and they will deny their worship.
46:7 When Our clear signs are recited to them, those who disbelieve say about the truth when it comes to them, “This is obvious magic.”
46:8 Or do they say, “He made it up”? Say, “If I made it up, you have no power to help me against Allah at all. He knows best what you say about it. He is enough as a witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
46:9 Say, “I am nothing new among the messengers, and I do not know what will be done with me or with you. I follow only what is revealed to me, and I am only a clear warner.”
46:10 Say, “Have you considered? If it is from Allah and you reject it, while a witness from the Children of Israel testifies to something like it and believes, and you act arrogantly, Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.”
46:11 Those who disbelieve say about those who believe, “If it were any good, they would not have beaten us to it.” And since they are not guided by it, they will say, “This is an old lie.”
46:12 Before it was Moses’s Book, a guide and a mercy. And this is a Book that confirms [that earlier Scripture], in Arabic, to warn those who do wrong and as good news for those who do good.
46:13 Indeed, those who say, “Our Lord is Allah” then remain firm, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
46:14 They are the people of Paradise, there forever, as a reward for what they used to do.
46:15 We have instructed the human being to treat his parents with kindness. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship. Pregnancy and weaning together take thirty months, until, when he reaches full strength and reaches forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You bestowed on me and on my parents, and to do good that pleases You. Make my offspring righteous for me. I have turned back to You, and I am one of those who submit.”
46:16 Those are the ones from whom We accept the best of what they did, and We overlook their wrongs, among the people of Paradise. This is the true promise they were given.
46:17 But the one who says to his parents, “Ugh to both of you! Are you promising me that I will be raised from the dead, when generations have already passed before me?” while they both cry to Allah for help: “Woe to you! Believe. Allah’s promise is true.” But he says, “This is nothing but tales of the ancients.”
46:18 Those are the ones against whom the sentence has come due, among communities of jinn and humans that passed before them. They were losers.
46:19 For everyone there are levels according to what they did, so He may pay them fully for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.
46:20 On the Day those who disbelieved are presented to the Fire: “You used up your good things in your worldly life and enjoyed them. So today you are repaid with the punishment of humiliation, because you were arrogant on earth without right, and because you were defiantly disobedient.”
46:21 Mention the kinsman of Aad [Hud], when he warned his people among the wind-curved sandhills. Warners had already passed before him and after him: “Do not worship anyone but Allah. I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous Day.”
46:22 They said, “Have you come to turn us away from our gods? Then bring us what you threaten us with, if you are telling the truth.”
46:23 He said, “The knowledge is only with Allah, and I convey to you what I was sent with. But I see that you are a people who act ignorantly.”
46:24 Then, when they saw it [the punishment] as a cloud bank coming toward their valleys, they said, “This cloud will bring us rain.” No, it is what you asked to be hurried: a wind with a painful punishment in it.
46:25 destroying everything by its Lord’s command. By morning, nothing could be seen but their homes. That is how We repay criminal people.
46:26 We had certainly given them power in ways We have not given you [Meccans], and We gave them hearing, sight, and hearts. But their hearing, sight, and hearts did not help them at all, because they kept rejecting Allah’s signs, and what they used to ridicule closed in on them.
46:27 We certainly destroyed towns all around you, and We varied the signs, so they might return.
46:28 Why, then, did those they had taken as gods besides Allah, to bring them near, not help them? No, they failed them. That was their lie, and what they used to invent.
46:29 And when We turned a group of jinn toward you [Prophet] to listen to the Qur’an. When they came to it, they said, “Listen quietly.” Then, when it was finished, they went back to their people as warners.
46:30 They said, “Our people, we have heard a Book sent down after Moses, confirming what came before it. It guides to the truth and to a straight path.
46:31 Our people, answer Allah’s caller [Muhammad] and believe in him; He will forgive you some of your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.
46:32 Whoever does not answer Allah’s caller cannot escape on earth, and he has no protectors apart from Him. Such people are clearly lost.
46:33 Have they not seen that Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and was not wearied by creating them, is able to bring the dead to life? Yes. He is able to do all things.
46:34 On the Day those who disbelieved are made to face the Fire: “Is this not the truth?” They will say, “Yes, by our Lord.” He will say, “Then taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve.”
46:35 So be patient, as the messengers of firm resolve were patient, and do not ask for it to be hastened for them. On the Day they see what they were promised, it will be as if they had stayed only an hour of a day. A message. Will anyone be destroyed except people who defy?
