Surah Al-Hashr (The Exile)
Madani · 24 ayahs
59:1 Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth glorifies Allah [God]. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
59:2 He is the One who drove those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture [the clan of Banu Nadir in Madinah] out of their homes at the first expulsion. You did not think they would leave, and they thought their fortresses would protect them from Allah. Then Allah came upon them from where they did not expect, and He threw terror into their hearts. They were destroying their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So learn from this, you who have insight.
59:3 If Allah had not decreed exile for them, He would have punished them in this world. And in the Hereafter they will have the punishment of the Fire.
59:4 That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. Whoever opposes Allah, then Allah is severe in punishment.
59:5 Whatever date palms you cut down, or left standing on their roots, was by Allah’s permission, and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient.
59:6 Whatever Allah gave over to His Messenger from them [Banu Nadir], you did not charge for it with horses or riding camels. But Allah gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allah has power over all things.
59:7 Whatever Allah gives over to His Messenger from the people of the towns is for Allah, the Messenger, close relatives [of the Messenger], orphans, the needy, and stranded travelers, so it does not circulate only among the rich among you. Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; whatever he forbids you, stop. Be mindful of Allah. Allah is severe in punishment.
59:8 It is for the poor Emigrants [who had left Makkah], those driven from their homes and possessions, seeking bounty from Allah and approval, and standing by Allah and His Messenger. Those are the truthful.
59:9 And those who were already settled in the Home [Madinah], and in faith, before them love those who emigrated to them. They find no resentment in their hearts over what the emigrants were given, and they prefer them over themselves, even when they themselves are in need. Whoever is protected from his own greed, those are the successful.
59:10 And those who came after them say, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith. Do not put rancor in our hearts toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are kind and merciful.”
59:11 Have you not considered those who were hypocrites? They were saying to their brothers who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, “If you are driven out, we will certainly leave with you. We will never obey anyone against you. And if you are fought, we will certainly help you.” Allah bears witness that they are liars.
59:12 If those people are driven out, the hypocrites will not leave with them. If they are fought, the hypocrites will not help them. Even if they do help them, they will turn their backs; then those people will not be helped.
59:13 You [believers] are more feared in their hearts than Allah. That is because they are a people who do not understand.
59:14 They will not fight you as one force except from fortified towns or from behind walls. Their violence among themselves is fierce. You think they are united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people who do not reason.
59:15 They are like those not long before them: they tasted the evil result of their own affair, and they will have a painful punishment.
59:16 It is like Satan when he says to a human being, “Disbelieve.” Then, when he disbelieves, he says, “I disown you. I fear Allah, Lord of all worlds.”
59:17 So the end for both of them is that they are in the Fire, staying there forever. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.
59:18 O you who believe, be mindful of Allah, and let every soul look at what it has sent ahead for tomorrow [the life to come]. Be mindful of Allah. Allah is fully aware of what you do.
59:19 Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. They are the rebellious.
59:20 The people of the Fire and the people of Paradise are not equal. The people of Paradise are the successful ones.
59:21 If We had sent this Quran down on a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, splitting apart from fear of Allah. We set out these examples for people, so they may think.
59:22 He is Allah. There is no god but Him, Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving.
59:23 He is Allah. There is no god but Him: the Sovereign, the Holy, the Source of Peace, the Giver of Security, the Guardian, the Mighty, the Compeller, the Supremely Great. Glory be to Allah, far above the partners they set beside Him.
59:24 He is Allah: the Creator, the Originator, the Shaper. His are the most beautiful names. Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
