Surah Al-'Alaq (The Clot)

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

96:1 Read, ˹O Prophet,˺ in the Name of your Lord Who created—

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

96:2 created humans from a clinging clot.

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ

96:3 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ

96:4 Who taught by the pen—

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

96:5 taught humanity what they knew not.

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ

96:6 Most certainly, one exceeds all bounds

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ

96:7 once they think they are self-sufficient.

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ

96:8 ˹But˺ surely to your Lord is the return ˹of all˺.

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ

96:9 Have you seen the man who prevents

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ

96:10 a servant ˹of Ours˺ from praying?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

96:11 What if this ˹servant˺ is ˹rightly˺ guided,

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ

96:12 or encourages righteousness?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

96:13 What if that ˹man˺ persists in denial and turns away?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

96:14 Does he not know that Allah sees ˹all˺?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

96:15 But no! If he does not desist, We will certainly drag him by the forelock—

نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

96:16 a lying, sinful forelock.

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ

96:17 So let him call his associates.

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ

96:18 We will call the wardens of Hell.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩

96:19 Again, no! Never obey him ˹O Prophet˺! Rather, ˹continue to˺ prostrate and draw near ˹to Allah˺.
