Surah Al-'Alaq (The Clot)

ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ

96:1 Read in the name of your Lord who created,

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

96:2 created the human being from a clinging clot.

ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ

96:3 Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous,

ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ

96:4 who taught by the pen,

عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

96:5 taught the human being what he did not know.

كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ

96:6 No indeed. The human being truly oversteps,

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ

96:7 when he sees himself as self-sufficient.

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ

96:8 Surely to your Lord is the return.

أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ

96:9 Have you seen the one [Abu Jahl] who forbids

عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ

96:10 a servant [Muhammad] when he prays?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

96:11 Have you considered: what if he [the praying servant] is on guidance,

أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ

96:12 or calls for mindfulness of Allah [God]?

أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

96:13 Have you considered: what if he denies and turns away?

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

96:14 Does he not know that Allah sees?

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

96:15 No indeed. If he does not stop, We will surely drag him by the forelock,

نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ

96:16 a lying, sinful forelock.

فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ

96:17 Then let him call his council.

سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ

96:18 We will call the guards of Hell.

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩

96:19 No indeed. Do not obey him. Prostrate, and draw near.
