Surah Al-Qamar (The Moon)

ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ

54:1 The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ

54:2 If they see a sign, they turn away and say, “Ongoing magic.”

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ

54:3 They denied and followed their desires, but every matter has its settled end.

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ

54:4 News has already come to them containing a strong deterrent:

حِكْمَةٌۢ بَـٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ

54:5 far-reaching wisdom. But warnings do not help.

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍ

54:6 So turn away from them. On the Day the caller calls to a dreadful thing,

خُشَّعًا أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌ

54:7 with humbled eyes, they will come out of the graves as if they were scattered locusts,

مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ

54:8 rushing toward the caller. The disbelievers will say, “This is a hard day.”

۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَ

54:9 Before them, the people of Noah denied. They denied Our servant and said, “A madman,” and he was driven away.

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْ

54:10 So he called on his Lord: “I am overpowered, so come to my aid.”

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ

54:11 So We opened the gates of the sky with water pouring down,

وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ

54:12 and We made the earth burst with springs. Then the waters met for a matter already decreed.

وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍ

54:13 We carried him [Noah] on a vessel of planks and nails,

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ

54:14 sailing under Our watchful eyes, as repayment for the one who had been rejected.

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

54:15 We have left it as a sign. So is there anyone who will take it to heart?

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

54:16 So how was My punishment, and My warnings?

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

54:17 We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take it to heart?

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

54:18 Aad denied. So how was My punishment, and My warnings?

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّ

54:19 We sent against them a furious wind on a day of lasting misfortune,

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍ

54:20 tearing people away as if they were uprooted palm trunks.

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

54:21 So how was My punishment, and My warnings?

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

54:22 We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take it to heart?

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

54:23 Thamud denied the warnings.

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ

54:24 They said, “Should we follow one human being from among ourselves? Then we would be lost and mad.”

أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌ

54:25 [They said,] “Was the Reminder sent down to him out of all of us? No, he is an arrogant liar.”

سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ

54:26 Tomorrow they will know who the arrogant liar is.

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ

54:27 We are sending the she-camel as a trial for them, so watch them [Salih] and be patient.

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌ

54:28 Tell them that the water is to be shared between them [the people and the she-camel]; each turn to drink will be attended.

فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

54:29 But they called their companion, and he stepped forward and hamstrung her.

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

54:30 So how was My punishment, and My warnings?

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ

54:31 We sent one blast against them, and they became like crushed dry brush from a livestock pen.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

54:32 We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take it to heart?

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

54:33 The people of Lot denied the warnings.

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍ

54:34 We sent a storm of stones against them, except for the family of Lot; We saved them before dawn.

نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ

54:35 as a favor from Us. This is how We reward whoever is grateful.

وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

54:36 He had warned them of Our fierce seizure, but they disputed the warnings.

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

54:37 They pressed [Lot] to give up his guests, so We wiped out their eyes: “Taste My punishment and My warnings.”

وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ

54:38 And by early morning, a lasting punishment had overtaken them.

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

54:39 So taste My punishment and My warnings.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

54:40 We have made the Quran easy to remember. So is there anyone who will take it to heart?

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ

54:41 Warnings had come to Pharaoh’s people.

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍ

54:42 They denied all Our signs, so We seized them with the seizing of One mighty and fully able.

أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ

54:43 Are your disbelievers [people of Mecca] better than those? Or do you have immunity in the Scriptures?

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌ

54:44 Or do they say, “We are a united force that will prevail”?

سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ

54:45 That force will soon be routed, and they will turn their backs.

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ

54:46 No, the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour will be more disastrous and more bitter.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ

54:47 Indeed, the guilty are lost and in a raging blaze.

يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ

54:48 The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces: “Taste the touch of Saqar [a name for Hell].”

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍ

54:49 We created everything by measure.

وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِ

54:50 Our command is only one, like the blink of an eye.

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

54:51 We have already destroyed the likes of you. So is there anyone who will take this to heart?

وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ

54:52 Everything they did is in the records.

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌ

54:53 Every small and great thing is written down.

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍ

54:54 Those mindful of Allah [God] will be in gardens and rivers,

فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ

54:55 in a seat of honor, near an all-powerful King.
