Surah An-Najm (The Star)

وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ

53:1 By the star when it sets,

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

53:2 your companion [Muhammad] has not lost his way, nor has he gone wrong.

وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ

53:3 He does not speak out of desire.

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰ

53:4 It is only revelation being revealed.

عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ

53:5 One mighty in power [Gabriel] taught him,

ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ

53:6 one full of strength; then he stood upright,

وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

53:7 while he was on the highest horizon.

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ

53:8 Then he drew near and came down,

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ

53:9 until he was two bow-lengths away, or nearer.

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ

53:10 Then he [Gabriel] revealed to Allah [God]’s servant what he revealed.

مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ

53:11 His heart did not deny what he saw.

أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ

53:12 Will you then argue with him about what he sees?

وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ

53:13 And he certainly saw him another time,

عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

53:14 by the Lote Tree at the farthest limit,

عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ

53:15 near which is the Garden of Refuge,

إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ

53:16 when the Lote Tree was covered by whatever covered it.

مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ

53:17 The sight did not swerve, nor did it overstep.

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ

53:18 He certainly saw some of his Lord’s greatest signs.

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ

53:19 Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza,

وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ

53:20 and Manat, the third, the other one?

أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ

53:21 Are males for you, and females for Him?

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓ

53:22 That would be an unfair division.

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

53:23 They are only names you and your fathers have given them. Allah has sent down no authority for them. They [the worshipers] follow only assumption and what souls desire, though guidance has already come to them from their Lord.

أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ

53:24 Or does a person get whatever he wishes for?

فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ

53:25 But the next life and this life belong to Allah alone.

۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ

53:26 And how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession is of no use at all, except after Allah permits it for someone He wills and approves.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ

53:27 Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give the angels female names.

وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔا

53:28 They have no knowledge of it. They follow nothing but guesswork, and guesswork is no substitute for the truth.

فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا

53:29 So turn away from anyone who turns away from Our reminder and wants only the life of this world.

ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ

53:30 That is the limit of their knowledge. Your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who is guided.

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى

53:31 Allah alone owns whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth, so He may repay those who do evil for what they have done, and reward those who do good with the best.

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓ

53:32 Those who avoid the major sins and shameful acts, apart from minor lapses, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He knew you best when He brought you into being from the earth, and when you were fetuses in your mothers’ wombs. So do not declare yourselves pure; He knows best who is mindful of Him.

أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ

53:33 Have you considered the one who turned away?

وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ

53:34 He gave a little, then held back.

أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ

53:35 Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so that he sees it?

أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ

53:36 Or has he not been told what was in the scriptures of Moses?

وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ

53:37 and of Abraham, who fulfilled what he was given.

أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ

53:38 No burdened soul will bear the burden of another,

وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ

53:39 and each person will have only what they worked for,

وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ

53:40 and their work will be seen,

ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ

53:41 then they will be repaid for it in full,

وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

53:42 and to your Lord alone is the final return,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ

53:43 and He alone makes people laugh and makes them weep,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا

53:44 and He alone causes death and gives life,

وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ

53:45 and He created the two kinds: male and female,

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ

53:46 from a drop when it is emitted,

وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ

53:47 and the next bringing forth rests with Him,

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ

53:48 and He alone gives wealth and lasting possession.

وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ

53:49 And that He is the Lord of Sirius [the star some Arabs worshiped].

وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ

53:50 And that He destroyed the first Aad,

وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ

53:51 and Thamud, leaving none alive,

وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ

53:52 and, before them, the people of Noah. They were even more unjust and more rebellious.

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ

53:53 And the overturned towns [of Lot’s people], He hurled down,

فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ

53:54 then covered them with what covered them.

فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰ

53:55 So which of your Lord’s favors will you doubt?

هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ

53:56 This is a warner like the warners of old.

أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ

53:57 The Approaching Hour has drawn near.

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

53:58 None but Allah can uncover it.

أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ

53:59 Do you then wonder at this message,

وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ

53:60 and laugh, and not weep?

وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ

53:61 while you are lost in amusement?

فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩

53:62 So prostrate to Allah, and worship Him.
