The Quran repeatedly says that Allah created the heavens and the earth in six days (including Quran 7:54 and 25:59). Quran 41:9–12 does not give a conflicting total of eight: its four-day figure includes the first two days spent creating the earth rather than adding four more days after them.
The apparent arithmetic
The critic reads the passage as three consecutive amounts:
- the earth created in two days (41:9);
- its mountains, blessings, and provisions completed in four more days (41:10);
- the seven heavens completed in two days (41:12).
On that reading, 2 + 4 + 2 equals eight. Explaining that the Arabic word yawm can mean a period or epoch does not answer the objection: six periods and eight periods would still be different totals.
The four days are cumulative
Verse 41:10 does not say “in another four days.” It says that Allah placed the mountains upon the earth, blessed it, and determined its provisions “in four days”. The four days give the total time for the earth and its preparation described across verses 9–10:
- two days for the earth's initial creation;
- two further days for its mountains, blessings, and provisions, completing four days in total;
- two days for forming the seven heavens.
The arithmetic is therefore 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, or equivalently 4 total days for the earth and its provisioning + 2 days for the heavens = 6.
Why phrase it as “in four days”?
This is ordinary cumulative speech. Someone might say, “I laid the foundation in two days and completed the house in six days.” The six days naturally describe the total through completion, not six additional days after the foundation. Likewise, Quran 41:9 gives the duration of the first stage, while 41:10 gives the cumulative duration after the earth had also been furnished.
This is how major classical commentators such as al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi, and Ibn Kathir reconciled the passage with the Quran's repeated six-day total. Their explanation does not depend on redefining the length of a “day”; it depends on reading the four days in verse 10 as an inclusive total.
Conclusion
Quran 41:9–12 does not say 2 + 4 + 2. It describes the earth's initial creation in two days, the completion of the earth and its provisions in four days altogether, and the heavens in two days. The total is six, exactly as stated in Quran 7:54, 25:59, and elsewhere.
