Surah Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable)

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ

56:1 When the Inevitable Event happens,

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

56:2 its happening will not be denied.

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ

56:3 It will bring low and raise high.

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا

56:4 When the earth is shaken hard,

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا

56:5 and the mountains are crushed to pieces,

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا

56:6 until they become scattered dust,

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً

56:7 you will become three kinds.

فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

56:8 The people of the right, what are the people of the right!

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

56:9 And the people of the left, what are the people of the left!

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ

56:10 And the foremost, the foremost!

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ

56:11 They are the ones brought near,

فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

56:12 in Gardens of Pleasure.

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

56:13 [The foremost will be] a large company from the earlier generations,

وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

56:14 and a few from the later ones.

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ

56:15 They will be on finely woven couches,

مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

56:16 reclining on them, facing one another.

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ

56:17 Ageless youths will circulate among them

بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ

56:18 with goblets, pitchers, and a cup from a flowing spring.

لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ

56:19 It will not give them headaches or make them lose their senses.

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ

56:20 They will have fruit of whatever they choose,

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

56:21 and the meat of birds, whatever they desire,

وَحُورٌ عِينٌ

56:22 and fair, wide-eyed ones,

كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ

56:23 like pearls kept safe,

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

56:24 as a reward for what they used to do.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا

56:25 There they will hear no empty talk and no sinful speech,

إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا

56:26 only the words, “Peace, peace.”

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ

56:27 And the people of the right, what about the people of the right?

فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ

56:28 Among thornless lote trees,

وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ

56:29 and clustered banana trees,

وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ

56:30 and spreading shade,

وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ

56:31 and water flowing freely,

وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ

56:32 and abundant fruit,

لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ

56:33 never ending and never withheld,

وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ

56:34 and raised couches.

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً

56:35 We have created them [their spouses] in a fresh creation,

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا

56:36 and made them virgins.

عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا

56:37 loving, equal in age,

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

56:38 for the people of the right:

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

56:39 a large company from the earlier generations,

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

56:40 and a company from the later generations.

وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ

56:41 And the people of the left, what will the people of the left be?

فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ

56:42 In scorching wind and scalding water,

وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ

56:43 and shade from black smoke,

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ

56:44 neither cool nor pleasant.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

56:45 Before that, they had been living in luxury,

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

56:46 and they used to persist in the great sin,

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

56:47 and they used to say, “When we die and become dust and bones, will we really be raised again?

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

56:48 And our forefathers too?”

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

56:49 Say, “The earlier peoples and the later ones

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

56:50 will all be gathered for the appointment of a known Day.”

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ

56:51 Then you, O you who lost your way and denied the truth,

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ

56:52 will surely eat from a tree of zaqqum [a tree of Hell],

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ

56:53 and you will fill your bellies with it,

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ

56:54 then drink scalding water on top of it,

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ

56:55 drinking like thirsty camels drink.

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

56:56 This is their welcome on the Day of Judgment.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

56:57 We created you, so why will you not accept the truth?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ

56:58 Have you considered what you emit?

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ

56:59 Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator?

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

56:60 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun.

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

56:61 [We are not powerless] to replace you with others like you, and to bring you forth in forms you do not know.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

56:62 You already know the first creation, so why do you not take heed?

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ

56:63 Have you considered what you sow?

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ

56:64 Is it you who make it grow, or are We the ones who make it grow?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ

56:65 If We willed, We would turn it into dry rubble, and you would be left wondering,

إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ

56:66 “We are ruined,

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

56:67 no, we have been deprived.”

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ

56:68 Have you considered the water you drink?

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ

56:69 Is it you who send it down from the rain clouds, or are We the ones who send it down?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

56:70 If We willed, We would make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ

56:71 Have you considered the fire you kindle?

ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ

56:72 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the ones who produced it?

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ

56:73 We made it [fire] a reminder and a benefit for travelers in the wilderness.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

56:74 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.

۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ

56:75 No, I swear by the setting places of the stars.

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ

56:76 And it is a great oath, if you only knew.

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ

56:77 It is truly a noble Qur'an,

فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ

56:78 in a well-guarded Book.

لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

56:79 None touch it except the purified.

تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

56:80 A revelation from the Lord of all worlds.

أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ

56:81 So is this message what you treat with indifference?

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

56:82 And do you make your response to provision denial?

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ

56:83 Then why, when it [the soul] reaches the throat,

وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ

56:84 while you are watching at that moment,

وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ

56:85 And We are nearer to him [the dying person] than you are, but you do not see.

فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ

56:86 So why, if you will not be held to account,

تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

56:87 do you not bring it [the soul] back, if you are truthful?

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

56:88 Then, if he is one of those brought near,

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ

56:89 there is relief, provision, and a Garden of pleasure.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

56:90 And if he is one of the people of the right,

فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

56:91 then, “Peace to you,” from the people of the right.

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

56:92 But if he is one of those who denied and lost their way,

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ

56:93 then hospitality of scalding water,

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

56:94 and burning in Hellfire.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ

56:95 This is indeed the truth that is certain.

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

56:96 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.
