Surah As-Saffat (Those who set the Ranks)

وَٱلصَّـٰٓفَّـٰتِ صَفًّا

37:1 By those lined up in rows,

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجْرًا

37:2 and those who drive with force,

فَٱلتَّـٰلِيَـٰتِ ذِكْرًا

37:3 and those who recite the Reminder:

إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمْ لَوَٰحِدٌ

37:4 Your deity is truly One,

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ

37:5 Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them, and Lord of the points of sunrise.

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلْكَوَاكِبِ

37:6 We have adorned the nearest sky with the beauty of the stars,

وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ مَّارِدٍ

37:7 and made it a guard against every rebellious devil.

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ

37:8 They cannot eavesdrop on the High Assembly [of angels], and they are pelted from every side,

دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ

37:9 driven away; and for them is a lasting punishment.

إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ ٱلْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ

37:10 Except one who snatches a quick fragment, then a piercing flame pursues him.

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَآ ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍۭ

37:11 So ask them: Are they harder to create, or those We created? We created them from sticky clay.

بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ

37:12 No. You [Prophet] are amazed, while they mock.

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا يَذْكُرُونَ

37:13 And when they are reminded, they take no reminder.

وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ

37:14 And when they see a sign, they make a mockery of it.

وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ

37:15 They say, “This is nothing but obvious magic.

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

37:16 When we have died and become dust and bones, will we really be raised?

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

37:17 And our forefathers too?”

قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَٰخِرُونَ

37:18 Say, “Yes, and you will be brought low.”

فَإِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجْرَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ

37:19 It will be only one blast, and suddenly they will be staring.

وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰوَيْلَنَا هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِ

37:20 They will say, “Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense.”

هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ

37:21 This is the Day of Decision that you used to deny.

۞ ٱحْشُرُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَأَزْوَٰجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْبُدُونَ

37:22 [The command is given:] Gather those who did wrong, their counterparts, and whatever they used to worship

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

37:23 apart from Allah [God], then lead them to the path of the Blaze.

وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْـُٔولُونَ

37:24 And stop them; they are to be questioned.

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ

37:25 What is wrong with you? Why do you not help one another?

بَلْ هُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ

37:26 No. Today they surrender.

وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

37:27 They will turn to one another, questioning each other.

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

37:28 They will say, “You used to come at us from the side of trust.”

قَالُوا۟ بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ

37:29 They will say, “No. You were not believers.

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَـٰنٍۭ ۖ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَـٰغِينَ

37:30 We had no authority over you. No, you were a people who overstepped.

فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَآ ۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ

37:31 So our Lord’s word has proved true against us: we are sure to taste [the punishment].

فَأَغْوَيْنَـٰكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَـٰوِينَ

37:32 So we led you astray; we ourselves were astray.”

فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ

37:33 That Day, they will all share in the punishment.

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

37:34 That is how We deal with the guilty.

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوٓا۟ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ

37:35 When it was said to them, “There is no god but Allah,” they would act with arrogance,

وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓا۟ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍۭ

37:36 and they would say, “Are we really to leave our gods for a mad poet?”

بَلْ جَآءَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

37:37 No. He brought the truth and confirmed the messengers.

إِنَّكُمْ لَذَآئِقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَلِيمِ

37:38 You will surely taste the painful punishment.

وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ

37:39 You will only be repaid for what you used to do.

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

37:40 Except Allah’s chosen servants.

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ

37:41 For them there is a known provision:

فَوَٰكِهُ ۖ وَهُم مُّكْرَمُونَ

37:42 fruits, and they will be honored,

فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

37:43 in Gardens of Delight,

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

37:44 on couches, facing one another.

يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍۭ

37:45 A cup from a flowing spring will be passed around among them,

بَيْضَآءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ

37:46 clear white, delicious to those who drink.

لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ

37:47 There is no harm in it, and they will not be drunk from it.

وَعِندَهُمْ قَـٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ عِينٌ

37:48 And with them will be companions of restrained gaze and beautiful eyes.

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَّكْنُونٌ

37:49 as if they were eggs kept safe.

فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

37:50 Then some will turn to others, asking each other questions.

قَالَ قَآئِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ إِنِّى كَانَ لِى قَرِينٌ

37:51 One of them will say, “I had a companion

يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُصَدِّقِينَ

37:52 who would say, ‘Are you really one of those who believe?

أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ

37:53 When we have died and become dust and bones, will we really be brought to Judgment?’”

قَالَ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ

37:54 He will say, “Will you look down [to see him]?”

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِى سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

37:55 Then he will look and see him in the middle of Hellfire.

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرْدِينِ

37:56 He will say, “By Allah, you almost ruined me.

وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّى لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْضَرِينَ

37:57 If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been among those brought in.

أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ

37:58 So are we not going to die,

إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

37:59 except our first death, and are we not going to be punished?

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ

37:60 This truly is the great success.”

لِمِثْلِ هَـٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ ٱلْعَـٰمِلُونَ

37:61 For something like this, let those who work do their work.

أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُّزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ

37:62 Is that better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَـٰهَا فِتْنَةً لِّلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

37:63 We have made it a trial for the wrongdoers [who mocked the idea of a tree in the Fire].

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِىٓ أَصْلِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

37:64 It is a tree that grows from the bottom of Hellfire.

طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ

37:65 Its fruit-stalks are as if they were the heads of devils.

فَإِنَّهُمْ لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ

37:66 They will surely eat from it and fill their bellies with it.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ

37:67 Then, on top of it, they will have a mixture of boiling water.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى ٱلْجَحِيمِ

37:68 Then their return will surely be to Hellfire.

إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ ضَآلِّينَ

37:69 They found their fathers lost,

فَهُمْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ

37:70 so they are rushed along in their footsteps.

وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

37:71 Before them, most of the former peoples had already lost their way,

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ

37:72 and We had already sent warners among them.

فَٱنظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

37:73 So see what became of those who were warned,

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

37:74 Except Allah’s chosen servants.

وَلَقَدْ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ ٱلْمُجِيبُونَ

37:75 Noah had called to Us, and how excellent We are in answering.

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

37:76 We saved him and his family from the great distress,

وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ

37:77 and We made his descendants the ones who lived on.

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

37:78 And We left for him among later generations:

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٍ فِى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

37:79 Peace upon Noah throughout the worlds.

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

37:80 That is how We reward those who do good.

إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

37:81 He was one of Our believing servants.

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

37:82 Then We drowned the other host.

۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ

37:83 And Abraham was surely among those of his way.

إِذْ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ

37:84 When he came to his Lord with a sound heart.

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ

37:85 When he [Abraham] said to his father and his people, “What are you worshiping?

أَئِفْكًا ءَالِهَةً دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ

37:86 Is it falsehood you want, gods besides Allah?

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

37:87 Then what do you think of the Lord of all worlds?”

فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةً فِى ٱلنُّجُومِ

37:88 Then he cast a glance at the stars

فَقَالَ إِنِّى سَقِيمٌ

37:89 and said, “I am unwell.”

فَتَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ

37:90 So they turned away from him and left.

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ

37:91 Then he slipped away to their gods and said, “Will you not eat?

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنطِقُونَ

37:92 What is wrong with you? Why do you not speak?”

فَرَاغَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضَرْبًۢا بِٱلْيَمِينِ

37:93 Then he turned on them, striking them with his right hand.

فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يَزِفُّونَ

37:94 Then they came rushing toward him.

قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ

37:95 He said, “Do you worship what you carve,

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

37:96 when Allah created you and what you make?”

قَالُوا۟ ٱبْنُوا۟ لَهُۥ بُنْيَـٰنًا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِى ٱلْجَحِيمِ

37:97 They said, “Build a structure for him, then throw him into the blazing Fire.”

فَأَرَادُوا۟ بِهِۦ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمُ ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ

37:98 They meant to plot against him, but We made them the lowest.

وَقَالَ إِنِّى ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ

37:99 He said, “I am leaving for my Lord; He will guide me.”

رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

37:100 “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.”

فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ حَلِيمٍ

37:101 So We gave him good news of a forbearing boy.

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعْىَ قَالَ يَـٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

37:102 Then, when the boy was old enough to work alongside him, he said, “My son, I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you, so tell me what you think.” He said, “My father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.”

فَلَمَّآ أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلْجَبِينِ

37:103 Then, when they had both submitted, and he laid him forehead-down,

وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ أَن يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ

37:104 We called out to him, “Abraham,

قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ ٱلرُّءْيَآ ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

37:105 you have fulfilled the vision.” That is how We reward those who do good.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْبَلَـٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلْمُبِينُ

37:106 This was surely the clear trial.

وَفَدَيْنَـٰهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ

37:107 And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

37:108 And We left for him [honored] among later generations:

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

37:109 Peace be upon Abraham.

كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

37:110 That is how We reward those who do good.

إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

37:111 He was one of Our believing servants.

وَبَشَّرْنَـٰهُ بِإِسْحَـٰقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

37:112 And We gave him good news of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

وَبَـٰرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسْحَـٰقَ ۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَظَالِمٌ لِّنَفْسِهِۦ مُبِينٌ

37:113 And We blessed him and Isaac. Among their descendants are some who do good and some who clearly wrong themselves.

وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ

37:114 And We certainly favored Moses and Aaron.

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُمَا وَقَوْمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

37:115 And We saved them both, along with their people, from the great distress.

وَنَصَرْنَـٰهُمْ فَكَانُوا۟ هُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

37:116 And We helped them, so they were the ones who prevailed.

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمَا ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ ٱلْمُسْتَبِينَ

37:117 And We gave them both the clear Book [the Torah].

وَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

37:118 And We guided them both to the straight path.

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِمَا فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

37:119 And We left for them among later generations:

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَـٰرُونَ

37:120 Peace be upon Moses and Aaron.

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

37:121 That is how We reward those who do good.

إِنَّهُمَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

37:122 Both of them were among Our believing servants [Moses and Aaron].

وَإِنَّ إِلْيَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

37:123 And Elijah was one of the messengers.

إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

37:124 When he said to his people, “Will you not be mindful of Allah?

أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَ

37:125 Do you call on Baal [the idol they worshiped] and abandon the Best of creators,

ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

37:126 Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your earliest forefathers?”

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ

37:127 But they denied him, so they will surely be brought in.

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

37:128 Except Allah’s chosen servants.

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

37:129 And We left for him among later generations:

سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلْ يَاسِينَ

37:130 “Peace be upon Elijah.”

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

37:131 That is how We reward those who do good.

إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

37:132 He was one of Our believing servants.

وَإِنَّ لُوطًا لَّمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

37:133 And Lot was one of the messengers,

إِذْ نَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ

37:134 when We saved him and all his family,

إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِى ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

37:135 except an old woman [his wife], who was among those left behind.

ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

37:136 Then We destroyed the others.

وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهِم مُّصْبِحِينَ

37:137 And you surely pass by them [their ruined towns] in the morning,

وَبِٱلَّيْلِ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ

37:138 and at night. Will you not use reason?

وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

37:139 And Jonah was one of the messengers,

إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ

37:140 when he ran away to the loaded ship.

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ

37:141 Then he cast lots, and he was among the losers.

فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ

37:142 Then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.

فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ

37:143 Had he not been one of those who glorified Allah,

لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

37:144 he would have remained in its belly until the Day they are raised.

۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ

37:145 So We cast him onto the open shore while he was ill.

وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ

37:146 And We made a gourd plant grow over him.

وَأَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ

37:147 And We sent him to a hundred thousand people, or more.

فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ

37:148 They believed, so We let them enjoy life for a while.

فَٱسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلْبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلْبَنُونَ

37:149 So ask them: Does your Lord have daughters, while they have sons?

أَمْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَـٰثًا وَهُمْ شَـٰهِدُونَ

37:150 Or did We create the angels female while they were there to witness it?

أَلَآ إِنَّهُم مِّنْ إِفْكِهِمْ لَيَقُولُونَ

37:151 No doubt, it is from their own falsehood that they say,

وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

37:152 “Allah has fathered children.” They are certainly lying.

أَصْطَفَى ٱلْبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلْبَنِينَ

37:153 Has He chosen daughters over sons?

مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ

37:154 What is wrong with you? How do you judge?

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

37:155 Will you not pay heed?

أَمْ لَكُمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ مُّبِينٌ

37:156 Or do you have a clear authority?

فَأْتُوا۟ بِكِتَـٰبِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ

37:157 Then bring your scripture, if you are truthful.

وَجَعَلُوا۟ بَيْنَهُۥ وَبَيْنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ ٱلْجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ

37:158 They have claimed a family tie between Him and the jinn, though the jinn know they will surely be brought in.

سُبْحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

37:159 Glory be to Allah, far above what they attribute to Him.

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

37:160 Except Allah’s chosen servants.

فَإِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ

37:161 So you, and what you worship,

مَآ أَنتُمْ عَلَيْهِ بِفَـٰتِنِينَ

37:162 cannot lure anyone away from Him,

إِلَّا مَنْ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ

37:163 except the one who is bound to burn in Hellfire.

وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامٌ مَّعْلُومٌ

37:164 There is not one of us without a known station.

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ

37:165 And we are the ones who stand in ranks.

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ ٱلْمُسَبِّحُونَ

37:166 And we are the ones who glorify Him.

وَإِن كَانُوا۟ لَيَقُولُونَ

37:167 They used to say,

لَوْ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكْرًا مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

37:168 “If only we had a reminder from the earlier peoples,”

لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

37:169 we would certainly have been Allah’s chosen servants.”

فَكَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

37:170 Yet they disbelieved in it, so they will soon know.

وَلَقَدْ سَبَقَتْ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

37:171 Our word had already gone out for Our servants, the messengers:

إِنَّهُمْ لَهُمُ ٱلْمَنصُورُونَ

37:172 they will surely be helped,

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ

37:173 and Our forces will surely be the ones who prevail.

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ

37:174 So turn away from them for a while.

وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ

37:175 Watch them, for they will soon see.

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

37:176 Is it Our punishment, then, that they are trying to rush?

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

37:177 But when it comes down in their courtyard, what an awful morning for those who were warned.

وَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ

37:178 So turn away from them for a while.

وَأَبْصِرْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ

37:179 Watch, for they will soon see.

سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

37:180 Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Might, far above what they attribute.

وَسَلَـٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

37:181 And peace be upon the messengers.

وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

37:182 And all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
