Surah Sad (The Letter "Saad")

صٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ذِى ٱلذِّكْرِ

38:1 Sad. By the Quran, full of reminder.

بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِى عِزَّةٍ وَشِقَاقٍ

38:2 Yet those who disbelieve are sunk in pride and opposition.

كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن قَرْنٍ فَنَادَوا۟ وَّلَاتَ حِينَ مَنَاصٍ

38:3 How many generations We destroyed before them. Then they cried out, but it was no time to escape.

وَعَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ ۖ وَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا سَـٰحِرٌ كَذَّابٌ

38:4 They were amazed that a warner came to them from among themselves. The disbelievers said, “This is a magician, a liar.

أَجَعَلَ ٱلْـَٔالِهَةَ إِلَـٰهًا وَٰحِدًا ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عُجَابٌ

38:5 Has he made all the gods into one God? This is truly a strange thing.”

وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلْمَلَأُ مِنْهُمْ أَنِ ٱمْشُوا۟ وَٱصْبِرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ يُرَادُ

38:6 The chiefs among them went off, saying, “Go on, and stand firm by your gods. This is surely something intended.

مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِى ٱلْمِلَّةِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا ٱخْتِلَـٰقٌ

38:7 We have never heard of this in the latest religion. This is nothing but a fabrication.

أَءُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّ مِّن ذِكْرِى ۖ بَل لَّمَّا يَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِ

38:8 Was the Reminder sent down to him, out of all of us?” No, they are in doubt about My Reminder. No, they have not yet tasted My punishment.

أَمْ عِندَهُمْ خَزَآئِنُ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْوَهَّابِ

38:9 Or do they hold the treasuries of your Lord’s mercy, the Almighty, the Ever-Giving?

أَمْ لَهُم مُّلْكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ فَلْيَرْتَقُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَسْبَـٰبِ

38:10 Or do they own the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them? Then let them climb by the ways upward.

جُندٌ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهْزُومٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ

38:11 A mere army there, one of the factions, will be defeated.

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو ٱلْأَوْتَادِ

38:12 Before them, the people of Noah denied, as did Aad and Pharaoh, lord of the stakes.

وَثَمُودُ وَقَوْمُ لُوطٍ وَأَصْحَـٰبُ لْـَٔيْكَةِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْأَحْزَابُ

38:13 and Thamud, the people of Lot, and the people of the Wood. Those were the factions.

إِن كُلٌّ إِلَّا كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ عِقَابِ

38:14 Every one of them denied the messengers, so My punishment became deserved.

وَمَا يَنظُرُ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً مَّا لَهَا مِن فَوَاقٍ

38:15 These people [the Meccan deniers] are waiting only for one blast, with no pause after it.

وَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا عَجِّل لَّنَا قِطَّنَا قَبْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ

38:16 They say, “Our Lord, hurry our share to us before the Day of Account.”

ٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلْأَيْدِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

38:17 Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant David, a man of strength. He kept turning back.

إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ

38:18 We made the mountains serve with him, glorifying at evening and sunrise,

وَٱلطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةً ۖ كُلٌّ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

38:19 and the birds, gathered together. Each would turn back with him.

وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ

38:20 We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and clear, decisive speech.

۞ وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا۟ ٱلْمِحْرَابَ

38:21 Has the news of the disputants reached you, when they climbed over the wall into the prayer chamber?

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ دَاوُۥدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ خَصْمَانِ بَغَىٰ بَعْضُنَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَٱهْدِنَآ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ

38:22 When they came in to David, he was alarmed by them. They said, “Do not be afraid. We are two sides in a dispute; one of us has wronged the other. Judge between us with truth, do not be unfair, and guide us to the right way.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَآ أَخِى لَهُۥ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِىَ نَعْجَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ

38:23 This is my brother. He has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe. He said, ‘Give her into my care,’ and he overpowered me in argument.”

قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ ۖ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ ۗ وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّـٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ ۩

38:24 He said, “He has certainly wronged you by demanding your ewe to add to his ewes. Many partners wrong one another, except those who believe and do good, and how few they are.” David realized that We had tested him, so he asked his Lord for forgiveness, fell down bowing, and turned back.

فَغَفَرْنَا لَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

38:25 So We forgave him that. With Us, he surely has nearness and a good return.

يَـٰدَاوُۥدُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَـٰكَ خَلِيفَةً فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌۢ بِمَا نَسُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْحِسَابِ

38:26 O David, We have made you a ruler on earth, so judge between people with justice, and do not follow desire, for it will lead you off Allah [God]’s way. Those who lose Allah’s way will have a severe punishment because they forgot the Day of Account.

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا بَـٰطِلًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ

38:27 We did not create the heaven and the earth and all that is between them for nothing. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve. So woe to those who disbelieve: the Fire.

أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ كَٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَمْ نَجْعَلُ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ كَٱلْفُجَّارِ

38:28 Or would We make those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who spread corruption on earth? Or would We make those who are mindful of Allah like the wicked?

كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَـٰرَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

38:29 This is a blessed Book We have sent down to you, so they may ponder its verses, and so people of understanding may take reminder.

وَوَهَبْنَا لِدَاوُۥدَ سُلَيْمَـٰنَ ۚ نِعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

38:30 And We gave Solomon to David. What an excellent servant; he kept turning back.

إِذْ عُرِضَ عَلَيْهِ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ ٱلصَّـٰفِنَـٰتُ ٱلْجِيَادُ

38:31 When fine, swift horses were displayed before him in the afternoon,

فَقَالَ إِنِّىٓ أَحْبَبْتُ حُبَّ ٱلْخَيْرِ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّى حَتَّىٰ تَوَارَتْ بِٱلْحِجَابِ

38:32 he said, “I preferred the love of fine things over remembering my Lord, until it [the sun] disappeared behind the veil.”

رُدُّوهَا عَلَىَّ ۖ فَطَفِقَ مَسْحًۢا بِٱلسُّوقِ وَٱلْأَعْنَاقِ

38:33 “Bring them back to me.” Then he set about stroking their legs and necks.

وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا سُلَيْمَـٰنَ وَأَلْقَيْنَا عَلَىٰ كُرْسِيِّهِۦ جَسَدًا ثُمَّ أَنَابَ

38:34 We certainly tried Solomon, and We placed a body on his throne; then he turned back.

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَهَبْ لِى مُلْكًا لَّا يَنۢبَغِى لِأَحَدٍ مِّنۢ بَعْدِىٓ ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْوَهَّابُ

38:35 He said, “My Lord, forgive me, and grant me a kingdom that will not belong to anyone after me. You, and no one else, are the Bestower.”

فَسَخَّرْنَا لَهُ ٱلرِّيحَ تَجْرِى بِأَمْرِهِۦ رُخَآءً حَيْثُ أَصَابَ

38:36 So We subjected the wind to him, running gently by his command wherever he directed.

وَٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ كُلَّ بَنَّآءٍ وَغَوَّاصٍ

38:37 And [We subjected to him] the devils, every builder and diver,

وَءَاخَرِينَ مُقَرَّنِينَ فِى ٱلْأَصْفَادِ

38:38 and others, chained together in shackles.

هَـٰذَا عَطَآؤُنَا فَٱمْنُنْ أَوْ أَمْسِكْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

38:39 This is Our gift, so give freely or hold back, without account.

وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

38:40 And for him, with Us, there is nearness and a beautiful return.

وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَآ أَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ بِنُصْبٍ وَعَذَابٍ

38:41 And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, “Satan has afflicted me with distress and suffering.”

ٱرْكُضْ بِرِجْلِكَ ۖ هَـٰذَا مُغْتَسَلٌۢ بَارِدٌ وَشَرَابٌ

38:42 Stamp your foot. This is cool water to wash in and to drink.

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥٓ أَهْلَهُۥ وَمِثْلَهُم مَّعَهُمْ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا وَذِكْرَىٰ لِأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

38:43 And We gave him his family, and as many more with them, as mercy from Us and a reminder for people of understanding.

وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ ضِغْثًا فَٱضْرِب بِّهِۦ وَلَا تَحْنَثْ ۗ إِنَّا وَجَدْنَـٰهُ صَابِرًا ۚ نِّعْمَ ٱلْعَبْدُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ

38:44 Take a bundle in your hand; strike with it, and do not break your oath. We found him patient. What an excellent servant; he kept turning back.

وَٱذْكُرْ عِبَـٰدَنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَـٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ أُو۟لِى ٱلْأَيْدِى وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِ

38:45 And remember Our servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, men of strength and insight.

إِنَّآ أَخْلَصْنَـٰهُم بِخَالِصَةٍ ذِكْرَى ٱلدَّارِ

38:46 We set them apart with a pure quality: remembering the Final Home.

وَإِنَّهُمْ عِندَنَا لَمِنَ ٱلْمُصْطَفَيْنَ ٱلْأَخْيَارِ

38:47 And with Us, they are among the chosen, the best.

وَٱذْكُرْ إِسْمَـٰعِيلَ وَٱلْيَسَعَ وَذَا ٱلْكِفْلِ ۖ وَكُلٌّ مِّنَ ٱلْأَخْيَارِ

38:48 And remember Ishmael, Elisha, and Dhul-Kifl. Each was among the best.

هَـٰذَا ذِكْرٌ ۚ وَإِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ لَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

38:49 This is a reminder. For the righteous there is a beautiful return:

جَنَّـٰتِ عَدْنٍ مُّفَتَّحَةً لَّهُمُ ٱلْأَبْوَٰبُ

38:50 Gardens of Eden, with the gates opened for them.

مُتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ وَشَرَابٍ

38:51 They will recline there, calling for abundant fruit and drink.

۞ وَعِندَهُمْ قَـٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ أَتْرَابٌ

38:52 With them will be companions of restrained gaze, well matched.

هَـٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِيَوْمِ ٱلْحِسَابِ

38:53 This is what you are promised for the Day of Account.

إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَرِزْقُنَا مَا لَهُۥ مِن نَّفَادٍ

38:54 This is Our provision; it will never run out.

هَـٰذَا ۚ وَإِنَّ لِلطَّـٰغِينَ لَشَرَّ مَـَٔابٍ

38:55 This is so. And for the rebellious there is the worst return:

جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَوْنَهَا فَبِئْسَ ٱلْمِهَادُ

38:56 Hell, where they will burn. What a wretched resting place.

هَـٰذَا فَلْيَذُوقُوهُ حَمِيمٌ وَغَسَّاقٌ

38:57 This is it, let them taste it: scalding water and foul discharge,

وَءَاخَرُ مِن شَكْلِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجٌ

38:58 and other things like it, in many kinds.

هَـٰذَا فَوْجٌ مُّقْتَحِمٌ مَّعَكُمْ ۖ لَا مَرْحَبًۢا بِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ صَالُوا۟ ٱلنَّارِ

38:59 “This is a crowd rushing in with you.” “No welcome to them; they will burn in the Fire.”

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ أَنتُمْ لَا مَرْحَبًۢا بِكُمْ ۖ أَنتُمْ قَدَّمْتُمُوهُ لَنَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرَارُ

38:60 They [the newcomers] say, “No, no welcome to you. You brought this on us. What a wretched place to settle.”

قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَا مَن قَدَّمَ لَنَا هَـٰذَا فَزِدْهُ عَذَابًا ضِعْفًا فِى ٱلنَّارِ

38:61 They will say, “Our Lord, whoever brought this on us, double his punishment in the Fire.”

وَقَالُوا۟ مَا لَنَا لَا نَرَىٰ رِجَالًا كُنَّا نَعُدُّهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَشْرَارِ

38:62 And they will say, “What is wrong with us that we do not see men we used to count among the worst?

أَتَّخَذْنَـٰهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُ

38:63 Did we take them as objects of ridicule, or have our eyes missed them?”

إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَحَقٌّ تَخَاصُمُ أَهْلِ ٱلنَّارِ

38:64 This is surely true: the quarreling of the people of the Fire.

قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ مُنذِرٌ ۖ وَمَا مِنْ إِلَـٰهٍ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ

38:65 Say, “I am only a warner. There is no god except Allah, the One, the Overpowering,

رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْغَفَّـٰرُ

38:66 Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, the Mighty, the Ever-Forgiving.”

قُلْ هُوَ نَبَؤٌا۟ عَظِيمٌ

38:67 Say, “It is tremendous news,

أَنتُمْ عَنْهُ مُعْرِضُونَ

38:68 yet you turn away from it.

مَا كَانَ لِىَ مِنْ عِلْمٍۭ بِٱلْمَلَإِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰٓ إِذْ يَخْتَصِمُونَ

38:69 I had no knowledge of the highest assembly [the angels] when they were disputing.

إِن يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ إِلَّآ أَنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

38:70 What is revealed to me is only this: that I am a clear warner.”

إِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن طِينٍ

38:71 When your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from clay.

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ

38:72 When I have shaped him and breathed into him from My spirit, fall down before him in prostration.”

فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ

38:73 So the angels prostrated, all of them together,

إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ ٱسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

38:74 except Iblis. He was arrogant and became one of the disbelievers.

قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْعَالِينَ

38:75 He said: Iblis, what kept you from prostrating to what I created with My own hands? Were you too proud, or were you among the exalted?

قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ ۖ خَلَقْتَنِى مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن طِينٍ

38:76 He said: I am better than him. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

38:77 He said, “Then get out of it, for you are cast out.

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ لَعْنَتِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

38:78 And My curse is on you until the Day of Judgment.

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

38:79 He said, “My Lord, then give me time until the Day they [Adam’s descendants] are raised.”

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ

38:80 He said: Then you are among those given respite

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ

38:81 until the Day of the known time.

قَالَ فَبِعِزَّتِكَ لَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

38:82 He said: By Your might, I will surely mislead them all,

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

38:83 except Your sincere servants among them.

قَالَ فَٱلْحَقُّ وَٱلْحَقَّ أَقُولُ

38:84 He said: The truth, and the truth I speak:

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكَ وَمِمَّن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

38:85 I will surely fill Hell with you and with all those among them who follow you.

قُلْ مَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ

38:86 Say, “I do not ask you for any payment for it, and I am not one of the pretenders.”

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

38:87 It is only a reminder for all worlds.

وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ نَبَأَهُۥ بَعْدَ حِينٍۭ

38:88 And you will surely know its news after a time.
