Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave)

Makki · 110 ayahs

18:1 All praise belongs to Allah [God], who sent down the Book to His servant [Muhammad] and put no crookedness in it,

18:2 straight and firm, to warn of severe punishment from Him, and to give believers who do good the good news that they will have a fine reward,

18:3 where they will remain forever.

18:4 And to warn those who say, “Allah has taken a son.”

18:5 They have no knowledge of this, and neither did their forefathers. What a monstrous word to come out of their mouths. They say nothing but a lie.

18:6 Perhaps you [Muhammad] will grieve yourself to death over them if they do not believe in this message.

18:7 We have made whatever is on earth an adornment for it, so We may test people: which of them is best in what they do.

18:8 And We will surely make whatever is on it a barren stretch of dust.

18:9 Or did you think that the Companions of the Cave and the Inscription were a wonder among Our signs?

18:10 When the young men took refuge in the cave, they said, “Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself, and set our affair on the right course.”

18:11 So We cast them into deep sleep in the cave for a number of years.

18:12 Then We woke them, to make clear which of the two groups [disputing their length of stay] had better calculated how long they had remained.

18:13 We tell you their story in truth. They were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.

18:14 We made their hearts firm when they stood up and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never call on any god besides Him. If we did, we would have said a monstrous thing.

18:15 These people of ours have taken gods besides Him. Why do they not bring clear authority for them? Who does greater wrong than someone who invents a lie against Allah?”

18:16 “Now that you have withdrawn from them and from what they worship besides Allah, take shelter in the cave. Your Lord will spread some of His mercy over you and make your situation easier for you.”

18:17 You would see the sun, when it rose, incline away from their cave to the right, and when it set, pass them by on the left, while they lay in an open space inside it. That was one of Allah’s signs. Whoever Allah guides is truly guided, and whoever He lets go astray, you will never find for him a protector to set him right.

18:18 You would think they were awake, though they were asleep. We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched its forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked in on them, you would have turned and run from them, and you would have been filled with dread.

18:19 And so We woke them, so they would question one another. One of them said, “How long have you stayed?” They said, “We stayed a day, or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord knows best how long you stayed. Send one of you with this silver coin of yours to the city. Let him see which food is purest, bring you some provision from it, and move carefully. Let no one become aware of you.

18:20 If they discover you, they will stone you or force you back into their religion, and then you will never succeed.”

18:21 And so We caused people to discover them, so they would know that Allah’s promise is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour. When they were disputing among themselves over their case, they said, “Build a structure over them; their Lord knows best about them.” Those whose view prevailed said, “We will surely make a place of worship over them.”

18:22 They will say, “They were three; their dog was the fourth.” Others will say, “Five; their dog was the sixth,” guessing at the unseen. And others will say, “Seven; their dog was the eighth.” Say, “My Lord knows best their number. None knows them except a few.” So do not argue about them except with plain argument, and do not ask any of those people about them.

18:23 And never say about anything, “I will do that tomorrow,”

18:24 unless Allah wills. And remember your Lord when you forget, and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to something nearer than this in right guidance.”

18:25 They stayed in their cave three hundred years, and added nine more.

18:26 Say, “Allah knows best how long they stayed. To Him belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How clearly He sees, and how clearly He hears. They have no protector besides Him, and He shares His judgment with no one.”

18:27 Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book of your Lord. No one can change His words, and you will never find any refuge besides Him.

18:28 Keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. Do not let your eyes pass over them, chasing the beauty of worldly life. And do not obey anyone whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his desires, and whose way is reckless.

18:29 And say, “The truth is from your Lord. So whoever wills, let him believe; and whoever wills, let him disbelieve.” We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire whose walls will close around them. If they cry for help, they will be given water like molten metal, scalding their faces. What a wretched drink, and what an evil resting place.

18:30 As for those who believe and do good, We do not let the reward of anyone who does good go to waste.

18:31 For them are Gardens of Eden, with rivers flowing beneath them. There they will be adorned with bracelets of gold, and they will wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining there on couches. What an excellent reward, and what a beautiful resting place.

18:32 Give them the example of two men: We gave one of them two vineyards, bordered them with date palms, and placed crops between them.

18:33 Each of the two gardens yielded its produce fully, without shortfall, and We made a river flow through them.

18:34 He had abundant fruit, so he said to his companion while talking with him, “I have more wealth than you, and a stronger following.”

18:35 He entered his garden, wronging himself, and said, “I do not think this will ever perish.”

18:36 “And I do not think the Hour will come. Even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find something better than this as a return.”

18:37 His companion, as he was speaking with him, said, “Do you disbelieve in the One who created you from dust, then from a drop of fluid, then shaped you into a man?

18:38 But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I make no one a partner with my Lord.

18:39 Why, when you entered your garden, did you not say, “What Allah wills. There is no power except with Allah”? If you see me as having less wealth and fewer children than you,

18:40 perhaps my Lord will give me something better than your garden, and send upon it a calamity from the sky, so that it becomes bare, slippery ground;

18:41 or its water may sink deep, and then you will never be able to reach it.”

18:42 His produce was destroyed, and he began wringing his hands over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsed on its trellises. He said, “If only I had not made anyone a partner with my Lord.”

18:43 He had no group to help him apart from Allah, nor could he help himself.

18:44 There, all protection belongs to Allah, the True. He is best in reward and best in outcome.

18:45 Give them the example of worldly life: it is like water We send down from the sky, by which the plants of the earth flourish, then turn into dry debris scattered by the winds. Allah has power over everything.

18:46 Wealth and children are the adornment of worldly life, but lasting good deeds are better with your Lord in reward and better to hope for.

18:47 And on the Day We set the mountains moving, you will see the earth laid bare, and We will gather everyone, leaving no one behind.

18:48 They will be presented before your Lord in rows: “You have come to Us just as We created you the first time. But you claimed We would never set an appointment for you [for this Day].”

18:49 The Record will be set down, and you will see the guilty fearful of what is in it. They will say, “Woe to us! What is this Record? It leaves out nothing small or great without counting it.” They will find what they did present before them, and your Lord wrongs no one.

18:50 And when We said to the angels, “Bow down before Adam,” they bowed down, except Iblis. He was one of the jinn, so he rebelled against his Lord’s command. Will you take him and his offspring as allies instead of Me, when they are your enemies? What a miserable exchange for the wrongdoers.

18:51 I did not have them witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor their own creation, and I would never take misleaders as helpers.

18:52 On the Day He will say, “Call those you claimed were My partners.” They will call them, but they will not answer them, and We will set a barrier of ruin between them.

18:53 The guilty will see the Fire and know they are falling into it, and they will find no way to escape it.

18:54 We have certainly varied every kind of example for people in this Quran, yet the human being is more argumentative than anything else.

18:55 Nothing kept people from believing, when guidance came to them, and from asking their Lord’s forgiveness, except that what befell earlier peoples should come upon them, or that the punishment should come right before their eyes.

18:56 We send the messengers only to bring good news and to warn. Those who disbelieve argue with falsehood to overturn the truth, and they take My signs and what they were warned of as a joke.

18:57 Who does greater wrong than someone reminded of his Lord’s signs, then turns away from them and forgets what his own hands have done? We have placed coverings over their hearts, keeping them from understanding it, and heaviness in their ears. If you call them to guidance, then they will never be guided, ever.

18:58 Your Lord is All-Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to hold them to account for what they have earned, He would have hastened the punishment for them. But they have an appointed time, and they will find no refuge from it.

18:59 Those communities, We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We set an appointed time for their destruction.

18:60 And when Moses said to his young attendant, “I will not stop until I reach the meeting place of the two seas, even if I travel for ages.”

18:61 But when they reached where the two [seas] met, they forgot their fish, and it slipped away into the sea.

18:62 When they had gone on farther, Moses said to his young attendant, “Bring us our morning meal. This journey of ours has worn us out.”

18:63 He [the attendant] said, “Do you remember when we rested by the rock? I forgot the fish, and none but Satan made me forget to mention it. It took its way into the sea, how strange!”

18:64 Moses said, “That is what we were looking for.” So they turned back, retracing their footsteps.

18:65 Then they found one of Our servants, to whom We had given mercy from Us, and whom We had taught knowledge from Our presence.

18:66 Moses said to him, “May I follow you, so that you teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught?”

18:67 He said, “You will not be able to be patient with me.

18:68 And how could you be patient over something you do not fully understand?”

18:69 Moses said, “You will find me patient, if Allah wills, and I will not disobey you in anything.”

18:70 He said, “Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I myself mention it to you.”

18:71 So they set out, until, when they boarded a ship, he made a hole in it. Moses said, “Did you make a hole in it to drown its people? You have done a terrible thing.”

18:72 He said, “Did I not tell you that you would not be able to be patient with me?”

18:73 He said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot, and do not make my task too hard for me."

18:74 So they went on until, when they met a boy, he killed him. Moses said, "Have you killed an innocent person who had taken no life? You have certainly done something terrible."

18:75 He said, "Did I not tell you that you would never be able to be patient with me?"

18:76 Moses said, "If I ask you about anything after this, do not keep me as a companion. You now have enough excuse from me."

18:77 So they went on until, when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. Then they found in it a wall about to collapse, so he set it upright. Moses said, "If you had wanted, you could have taken payment for it."

18:78 He said, "This is where you and I part. I will tell you the meaning of what you could not bear patiently."

18:79 As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. I wanted to damage it, because beyond them was a king seizing every [usable] ship by force.

18:80 As for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared he would burden them with rebellion and disbelief.

18:81 So we wanted their Lord to replace him for them with someone better in purity and nearer in affection.

18:82 As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and under it was a treasure belonging to them. Their father had been righteous, so your Lord wanted them to reach maturity and bring out their treasure as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do it on my own authority. That is the meaning of what you could not bear patiently.

18:83 They ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you an account of him."

18:84 We firmly established him in the land and gave him a means to everything.

18:85 So he followed a course.

18:86 Until, when he reached the place where the sun sets, he found it setting in a dark, muddy spring, and he found near it a community. We said, “Dhul-Qarnayn, either punish them or treat them well.”

18:87 He said, “As for anyone who does wrong, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.

18:88 But as for anyone who believes and does good, he will have the best reward, and we will speak to him gently in our command.”

18:89 Then he followed a course.

18:90 Until, when he reached the place where the sun rises, he found it rising over a community for whom We had made no shelter from it.

18:91 So it was, and We had full knowledge of what he had with him.

18:92 Then he followed a course.

18:93 Until, when he reached a place between the two barriers, he found before them a community who could hardly understand speech.

18:94 They said, “Dhul-Qarnayn, Yajuj and Majuj are spreading ruin in the land. May we pay you a tribute, so that you build a barrier between us and them?”

18:95 He said, “What my Lord has given me power over is better. Help me with labor, and I will make a strong barrier between you and them.

18:96 Bring me blocks of iron.” Then, when he had filled the gap between the two cliffs, he said, “Blow.” Then, when he had made it like fire, he said, “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.”

18:97 So they [Gog and Magog] could neither scale it nor tunnel through it.

18:98 He [Dhu al-Qarnayn] said, “This is a mercy from my Lord. But when my Lord’s promise comes, He will make it level, and my Lord’s promise is true.”

18:99 On that Day We will leave some of them surging into others. Then the Trumpet will be blown, and We will gather them all together.

18:100 On that Day We will display Hell clearly before the disbelievers,

18:101 those whose eyes had been covered against My reminder, and who were unable to listen.

18:102 Did those who disbelieved think they could take My servants as protectors instead of Me? We have prepared Hell as a lodging for the disbelievers.

18:103 Say, “Shall We tell you who lose the most through their deeds?”

18:104 Those whose efforts are lost in the life of this world, while they think they are doing good.

18:105 They are the ones who disbelieved in their Lord’s signs and in meeting Him, so their deeds came to nothing. On the Day of Resurrection We will give them no weight.

18:106 That is their repayment: Hell, because they disbelieved and treated My signs and My messengers as a joke.

18:107 As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, they will have the Gardens of Firdaws as a lodging.

18:108 They will stay there forever, never wanting to leave it for anywhere else.

18:109 Say, “If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would run dry before the words of my Lord ran dry, even if We brought another sea like it as a supply.”

18:110 Say, “I am only a human being like you. It is revealed to me that your God is One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord should do righteous work and associate no one in worshiping his Lord.”
