Surah Al-Fath (The Victory)
Madani · 29 ayahs
48:1 We have truly opened for you a clear victory.
48:2 so that Allah [God] may forgive you what came before of your sin and what comes after, complete His favor upon you, and guide you on a straight path,
48:3 and so that Allah may help you with mighty help.
48:4 He is the One who sent calm assurance into the hearts of the believers, so they would grow in faith along with their faith. To Allah belong the armies of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is knowing and wise.
48:5 so He may admit the believing men and believing women into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to remain there forever, and remove their misdeeds from them. That, with Allah, is a great success.
48:6 And so He may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the idolater men and idolater women, who think evil thoughts about Allah. The evil turn will fall on them. Allah is angry with them, has cursed them, and has prepared Hell for them. What an evil destination.
48:7 To Allah belong the armies of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is mighty and wise.
48:8 We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good news, and a warner,
48:9 so that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger, support and honor him, and glorify Him morning and evening.
48:10 Those who pledge allegiance to you [at Hudaybiyyah] are only pledging allegiance to Allah. The Hand of Allah is over their hands. Whoever breaks his pledge breaks it only against himself, and whoever fulfills what he pledged to Allah, He will give him a great reward.
48:11 Those Bedouins who stayed behind [from the Hudaybiyyah journey] will say to you, “Our property and our families kept us busy, so ask forgiveness for us.” They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say, “Who can do anything for you against Allah if He intends harm for you or intends benefit for you?” Rather, Allah is fully aware of what you do.
48:12 No, you thought the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, and that was made to seem pleasing in your hearts. You thought evil thoughts, and you were a people bound for ruin.
48:13 Whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared a Blazing Fire for the disbelievers.
48:14 To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
48:15 Those who were left behind will say, when you set out to take spoils, “Let us follow you.” They want to change Allah’s words. Say, “You will never follow us. That is what Allah said before.” Then they will say, “No, you envy us.” No, they understand only a little.
48:16 Say to the Bedouins who were left behind, “You will be called against a people of great fighting strength. You will fight them, unless they submit. If you obey, Allah will give you a good reward; but if you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.”
48:17 There is no blame on the blind, no blame on the lame, and no blame on the sick [for not joining the fighting]. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him into Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. Whoever turns away, He will punish him with a painful punishment.
48:18 Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged themselves to you under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent tranquility down upon them and rewarded them with a victory soon to come,
48:19 and many spoils they would take. Allah is Mighty, Wise.
48:20 Allah has promised you many spoils that you will take, and He brought this one forward for you. He held people’s hands back from you, so it would be a sign for the believers, and so He would guide you to a straight path.
48:21 And there are others you were not yet able to take; Allah already has them surrounded. Allah has power over all things.
48:22 If those who disbelieve had fought you, they would have turned their backs; then they would find no protector and no helper.
48:23 That is Allah’s way, which has passed before. You will never find any change in Allah’s way.
48:24 He is the One who held their hands back from you, and your hands back from them, in the valley of Makkah, after He gave you victory over them. Allah sees what you do.
48:25 They are the ones who rejected faith and barred you from the Sacred Mosque, while the sacrificial animals were held back from reaching their place of sacrifice. Were it not for believing men and believing women [in Mecca] whom you did not know, whom you might have struck down, bringing blame on yourselves because of them without knowing it, Allah would not have held you back. This was so Allah may admit into His mercy whom He wills. If those believers had been separated from them, We would have punished those among them who rejected faith with a painful punishment.
48:26 When those who rejected faith set fierce pride in their hearts, the pride of the age of ignorance, Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and bound them to the word of reverent restraint. They were more entitled to it and worthy of it. And Allah has always known everything.
48:27 Allah has certainly made His Messenger’s vision come true: in truth, you will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, secure, with your heads shaved or your hair cut short, with no fear. He knew what you did not know, so before that He brought about a near victory.
48:28 He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion, so He may make it prevail over every religion. Allah is enough as a witness.
48:29 Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Those with him are firm against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking favor from Allah and His pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is like a crop that sends out its shoot, then strengthens it; it grows thick and stands on its stem, pleasing the farmers, so that Allah enrages the disbelievers through them. Allah has promised those among them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.
