Surah 'Abasa (He Frowned)

عبس

Makki · 42 ayahs

80:1 He [the Prophet] frowned and turned away.

80:2 because the blind man came to him.

80:3 What would make you know? Perhaps he would purify himself,

80:4 or take the reminder, and the reminder would benefit him.

80:5 As for the one who thinks he has no need,

80:6 you give him your attention,

80:7 though it is not on you if he does not purify himself.

80:8 But as for the one who came to you striving,

80:9 while he was in awe,

80:10 you were distracted from him.

80:11 No indeed. This is a reminder.

80:12 So whoever wills may remember it.

80:13 It is in honored pages,

80:14 raised high and kept pure,

80:15 in the hands of scribes [angels],

80:16 noble and dutiful.

80:17 Perish the human being, how ungrateful he is!

80:18 From what thing did He create him?

80:19 From a drop of fluid He created him, then shaped him in measure.

80:20 Then He made the way easy for him.

80:21 Then He caused him to die and gave him burial.

80:22 Then, when He wills, He will raise him again.

80:23 No! He has not yet fulfilled what Allah [God] commanded him.

80:24 So let the human being look at his food.

80:25 how We poured down water in abundance,

80:26 then split the earth wide open,

80:27 and made grain grow in it,

80:28 and grapes and fresh fodder,

80:29 and olives and date palms,

80:30 and gardens with thick foliage,

80:31 and fruit and pasture,

80:32 as provision for you and your livestock.

80:33 But when the Deafening Blast comes,

80:34 that Day, a person will flee from his brother,

80:35 and from his mother and father,

80:36 and from his spouse and children.

80:37 Every one of them that Day will have enough to keep him occupied.

80:38 Some faces that Day will be bright,

80:39 laughing, rejoicing at good news.

80:40 And some faces that Day will have dust upon them,

80:41 covered by darkness.

80:42 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked.
