Surah Al-Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming)

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ

88:1 Has the news of the Overwhelming Event reached you?

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ

88:2 Faces that Day will be humbled,

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ

88:3 laboring and worn out,

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً

88:4 burning in a blazing Fire,

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ

88:5 given drink from a boiling spring.

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ

88:6 They will have no food except bitter thorn-bush,

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ

88:7 which neither nourishes nor relieves hunger.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ

88:8 And faces that Day will be joyful,

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ

88:9 pleased with what they worked for,

فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ

88:10 in a lofty Garden,

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً

88:11 where they will hear no empty talk.

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ

88:12 In it is a flowing spring.

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ

88:13 In it are raised couches,

وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ

88:14 and cups set in place,

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ

88:15 and cushions lined up,

وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ

88:16 and carpets spread out.

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ

88:17 Do they not look at the camels, how they were created,

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ

88:18 and at the sky, how it was raised,

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ

88:19 and at the mountains, how they were fixed,

وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ

88:20 and at the earth, how it was spread out?

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ

88:21 So remind; you are only one who reminds.

لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ

88:22 You are not a controller over them.

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ

88:23 But whoever turns away and denies,

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ

88:24 Allah [God] will punish him with the greatest punishment.

إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ

88:25 Their return is surely to Us.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم

88:26 Then it is surely for Us to call them to account.
